"The character's name is Georgie Fruit, and he's in his late forties, a black man who has been through multiple sex changes. He's been a man and a woman, and then back to a man. He's been to prison a couple of times. In the 1970s he was in a band called "Arousal", a funk rock band sort of like the Ohio Players. Then he went through a few different phases."
-Kevin Barnes
Holy shit I need a shower fuck this racial tourist Rachel Dolezal bullshit, dude

lol Last year Kevin actually edited a song and quietly put the song with new lyrics back on Spotify and streaming services. Changed the lyrics in "Wicked Wisdom" from "I'm just a black-shemale" to "I'm just a powdered bell".

guess this ain't the time to be zany-provocative.
but most everything i've heard about this dude sort of points towards a rather unlikeable pretentious diva. idk at least it translates into good music some half the time.

He's honestly really sweet and humble when you talk with him, but his persona and ego do appear pretty intense, but I mean, isn't that what made Bowie great?

there's only one other David B that can rival that swagger and be completely clean and the world has used that option to great results.

Apparently "Wicked Wisdom" and the album Skeletal Lamping, in general, is where all the racist shit is, although the character does get name-dropped on Hissing Fauna. I'm dreading listening to Skeletal Lamping now... maybe I'll put that one off until I heard most of the other albums
Kevin's apology from 2019, took him 11 years. Honestly, that's kinda a long time in internet years, but at least he sounds genuine: https://twitter.com/xxofMontrealxx/status/1193257225294356480
Outside of that though: I absolutely love of Montreal's music and most of their lyrics and honestly I'm extra disappointed because before learning this I saw Barnes are one of the coolest personalities in modern music. Not afraid to present LGBT themes (Barnes is both bi and genderqueer) in both an in your face and interesting way... but yeah he shouldn't be writing as a black person

@Ars- other than that one line he changed, there aren't any references to race and he certainly never did black-face or anything horrible like that. Georgie Fruit always felt like a device to be something so far removed from categorization that the individual in question was unrecognizable. I do agree though, giving GF a specific race wasn't a good idea.

Also presumably the fucked-up-edness of the name itself
"Fruit" obviously derogatorily referring to queer people
and
"George" a racial slur dating back to the slave trade.
With those two together, don't feel like much of an accident
