Honestly, grunge was less a genre in terms of having a defining musical cohesion, and more of just representing bands that came out of Seattle in the late 80s/ early 90s. Melvins are sludge, but were considered grunge, and so on. Yeah, sure you could say that the instrumental dissonance and devil-may-care gravelly voice of Cobain had a certain "grunginess" about it, but there was nothing particularly similar to that in Pearl Jam's music or Soundgarden's.
