It's heavy metal with a whiny dude.

Dirt is still a Ten though.

It definitely is, I'm sort of a grunge authority around here so just take my word for it :]

has anyone realized that Alice In Chains is a more butthurt version of Guns N' Roses?

If butthurt is now a synonym for "better" then yes.

you take that back

Also Alice in Chains has too much of a metal sound to be put under the grunge classification.

I think the only reason they're even apart of "the big 4 of grunge" is because they were a Seattle based band in the early 90's who's sound could have been mistaken for a "heavier grunge" at the time.

I'm not sure even what grunge is, exactly. I think the criteria for being a grunge band is "forming in the late 80's/early 90's in Seattle" and "wearing grungy clothes". AIC, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam sound hardly nothing alike IMO.

Yeah, I don't think it's defined very well.

grunge = heavy metal + more heroin than heavy metal

Honestly, I don't think "grunge" should be described as a genre myself, as it incorporates such a wide array of sonically different bands. I believe it'd be more appropriate to use it as just a way of referring to the great Seattle music scene that went on during that time.

Anyway, it's only a name so it doesn't even really matter in the first place.

I still am, sort of. I still don't think it should be considered a genre, though.
You're really having a problem with that sentence, aren't you bud? :]

Grunge has many definable qualities. Hard rock/heavy metal that's more gritty and punky than hair metal, uses lots of dissonance, lyrics are more cynical with emphasis on realism. Believe me, there were bands from Seattle that no one considered grunge.

Take notes, boys. You have bands such as Screaming Trees or Truly or Mad Season, some great psychedelic, almost blues influences coming out of there. On the other side of the spectrum, you have Mudhoney, Coffin Break, Nirvana (the era after Bleach, though), a lot more punk influenced than the other guys. Then, there's dudes such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Gruntruck, Skin Yard, Paw, Temple Of The Dog, a bit more metal than the rest.
So you see, in essence it'd be basically a hybrid of punk and metal, but so many different Seattle bands expand beyond that in so many ways that you end up encountering an enormous variety of different, sonically adventurous stuff. And if you know where to look, you find a lot of awesome bands.
Grunge authority is out.

AIC = metal influence

Nirvana = noise rock/punk influence

Pearl Jam = idk...like dad rock influence

No one's denying the variety but there's variety in a lot of genres too. I mean The Moody Blues and Magma are both progressive rock. Motley Crue and Slayer are both 80s metal. Louis Armstrong and Ornette Coleman are both jazz. It's just the way genre labeling pans out.
