as much as I love this album, my one major problem with it is the choice of "Dead Letters" as a closer. "The Act of Darkening" fills that role so much better, it's a shame it was left off the regular edition of the album.

Yeah it's true I have issues with the closer too.

"Dead Letters" is one of my most liked tracks here.

it's one of my favorites too, I just don't think it should've been the closing track. it's a pretty straightforward song, it feels more like a single and that's an odd way to end the album. a bit anti-climactic, I guess.

The thing that stops me from 5ing this is, although I enjoy this from front to back, I struggle to remember any song after bridges from the top of my head

Such a shame that Second is only in the limited huge artbook edition.

Katatoniaing it up right now. Jamming Brave Murder Day right now which is sweet and I've heard Last Fair Deal Gone Down and The Great Cold Distance. What are the others like?
|

last fair deal is often overlooked. get night is the new day, which is maybe their best (avoid this one, it's ridiculously overrated here and is basically a weaker night). viva emptiness is also very enjoyable

"(avoid this one, it's ridiculously overrated here and is basically a weaker night)"
Except this basically improves on everything from Night ¯_(ツ)_/¯ guess everyone must be wrong except you

I disagree, Night is one of their weaker albums. This rules, however. Viva Emptiness is also really nice.

Of the ones I've heard nothing has really stuck out as amazing but they make some sweet music.
|
| |
it absolutely doesn't improve on anything from night. it's basically night - the b-sides. it sounds very similar aesthetically, just not as dark and interesting. i just listened to the first 4 songs on this again and i don't hear what you guys are hearing. idle blood and departer are so much better than anything on here

I love this album but Gyro has a point, this is pretty derivative. The One You Are Looking For comes straight from New Night.
|
| |
thank the gods! somebody finally agrees that this is not some huge evolution from night

I can definitely see what you guys mean, I think they found a good core sound with NITND so a second album in the same realm as that isn't really a big negative for me. If it's still this similar 2 albums from now then yeah it will wear out it's welcome.

Any of yall heard the side project jonas and the main guy from pineapple thief made together? it has some fucking bangers
This song sounds like it was made in the 1910s carnival or something

I also agree with the fact that this feels like a Night is the New Day Pt.2, and it doesn't mark a big change of sound or breaks new ground. Despite that fact, this record still is really solid and enjoyable for me.
