Hmm possibly

I guess that’s trickier, imagine there’s a bunch of m&ms and I tell you to get the greens and give them to me, green is still an adjective not a noun but I guess it’s a weird way of using an adjective as a noun for shorthand… there’s probably a term for that

So actually yes then?

I mean nouns can function as adjectives without ceasing to be nouns e.g. a love story, a horse race. Neither 'love' nor 'horse' are adjectives but they function as them in those particular phrases

"rich, poor and elderly are all adjectives lol"

Dude, I specifically said the rich, the poor, and the elderly. Are you telling me "eat the rich" is a sentence without a noun?

I googled it, they’re called adjectival nouns… so I guess they’re both

English is stupid

adjectival nouns are nouns that's why they're called adjectival nouns and not nounal adjectives

“But I don't think you can have straight-up 'experimental'... experimental what though? Experimental pop? Experimental metal? To me, that word suggests an approach or a philosophy or a mission statement, not a style. Same goes for 'psychedelic' actually”

Agree. I think the association with psych rock is just cuz it’s like, the primordial form of psych music so I just default to that if someone doesn’t specify

Cambridge Dictionary defines "pop" as a noun:

pop

noun

/pɒp/ us

/pɑːp/

pop noun (MUSIC)

(formal popular music)

modern popular music, usually with a strong beat, created with electrical or electronic equipment, and easy to listen to and remember

that is because

genres are nouns

So while 'pop' is an abbreviation of the phrase 'popular music', specifically of the adjective in that genre name, it has become a noun in and of itself. Enough time and usage will do that, language evolves

Actually primordial is the wrong word cuz I’d consider some

Other much older genres to often be psychedelic

Most common to the current state of music I guess

I don't think psych originated in psych rock, but psych rock 100% popularised it

I mean I Hear a New World by Joe Meek is deff an example of psychedelic electronic and it’s from 1959, back when rock was certainly not psychedelic, so yeah some experimental examples predate Beach Boys/Beatles bred psych

it hasn't become a noun because of time and usage, it is a noun in that context because it is the word for a certain category of music, and is independent of the word "popular" which describes that category. a category is a thing, and is therefore a noun

Progressive is another one that gets short handed for progressive rock but doesn’t necessarily mean much on its own
