I mean when people say “indie” they are generally referring to “indie rock” and will specify a different genre if they mean it as a descriptor for another one

When people say “experimental” without further elaboration it’s a lot more vague imo

Same with “psychedelic”, unless you specify further it’s pretty safe to say they are referring to psych rock

Aren’t all genres adjectives because they describe nouns like bands and songs?

Pretty much with Pots here. There are genre tags that can be both an adjective and a noun, like pop... you can have pop metal, pop rock, and then just straight-up pop (KissFM or whatever)

But I don't think you can have straight-up 'experimental'... experimental what though? Experimental pop? Experimental metal? To me, that word suggests an approach or a philosophy or a mission statement, not a style. Same goes for 'psychedelic' actually

I think so. And it makes Colton look dumber.

Lofi is absolutely a genre for me and the best YouTube rabbit hole.

Lo-fi what? I guess usually people mean lo-fi like Pavement or whatever, in the same way indie usually means indie rock. But lo-fi can also refer to a certain style of electronic music. People should still specify whether they mean lo-fi rock or something else imo

Noise is another one... okay cool you're going to burst my eardrums, but using which styles, which instruments? Is this just rock with extra feedback or are we talking Sutcliffe Jugend

"genres are nouns dingus"

Pop is a noun when referring to the genre of that name. It is an adjective when used as a descriptor of another genre

Nah pop is an adjective, it’s a shorthand for “pop music” music being the noun

Do you guys even grammar

I usually think Sparklehorse or early Flaming Lips... probably because those were among the first musicians I listened to and thought "wow the sound quality is absolute dogshit but somehow in a good way"

So rock is an adjective and not a noun because it is shorthand for "rock music"?

the funny thing is, even though ‘experimental’ is a terrible descriptor for this (or any) album, it still somehow makes more sense than calling it ‘indietronica’ 😂

did that really just happen?

Are 'the rich', 'the poor', and 'the elderly' not nouns, simply because they are formally/originally short for 'rich people', 'poor people', and 'elderly people'?

popular is an adjective. "pop" in the context of a genre is a noun because genres are nouns
