Delivering an intricately mathy approach to pop-punk, Oregon-based outfit Icarus The Owl continue to amaze on their 2nd LP 'Love Always, Leviathan'. With finger-tapping quirky time signatures around every corner, the band definitely won't be for everyone due to the complexity of some of the song structures. If anything though, the quartet are more focused here, meaning this is still a relatively accessible album, even if it doesn't quite match the peaks of their debut. Either way, it's difficult to disagree that these are 4 technically skilled musicians. Recommended Tracks: What We Had Was Never Love, Nuclear Towns, Love Always Leviathan & Tear Down the Mountain.

I just got their debut a little while back, but I still need to give it an honest listen. It didn't quite reel me in like this one did. I was very surprised by the post hardcore tinge that came with it though.

honestly my favorite thing about the drummer is how he turns odd time signatures into really solid grooves.



What We Had Was Never Love's chorus is in 11/8 and the groove is still really tight. props.

11/8? Fuck, that's hard to count out, lol. Most of their time signature changes are pretty smooth with the transitions though, so that's even more impressive.

Yeah, I was trying to count it out and I kept getting lost. Really complex time signatures like that throw me off. I can handle the basics, 4/4, 3/4, 6/8. etc, even stuff like 5/4 isn't too terrible. I think the hardest ones I've ever tried to mess with are 12/8 and 9/8. Those took a few times to get used to.



I'd love to watch these guys play live, I bet that would be awesome.

My only gripe with the vocals is that his range is very limited here. If he employed more variety in the tracks, they would be even better.

I don't have a problem with the vocals, I think he sounds great. I think the guitar parts get a little repetitive (while still being technical and awesome sounding) here and there. The lead parts feel overly similar at times and is the reason I had trouble differentiating between some of the songs the first couple times I listened to it.
