Surfer Rosa is my favorite album of all time.

Anyway. From Track 6 on, I really don't like anything.

I saw a live performance of "Eternal Life" the other day.

It was horrible.

Hey great review. I just picked up this album at Tower Records for $8 (Can you believe it was in one of those 'bargain bins'?). I've heard a lot about this album being a must listen, so i figured I'd better give it a listen. I had expected it to be a lot more acoustic based, so i was pretty surprised when I first listened to it. It took me a couple days to get into the full album, after basically just listening to "Hallelujah" all the time. I agree that some of the songs are really drawn out longer than necessary, part of what discouraged me at first listen. The range of emotions in the songs are incredible, but the hooks are often imbedded deep within the songs. The best example I can think of this is the build up of "Dream Brother" with the drums. That part is simply captivating, but doesn't first occur until almost the 2 minute mark. Once I got to listening to the full songs though, I really got into Jeff's style. My favs are Dream Brother, Last Goodbye, Eternal Life, Lover..., and of course Hallelujah. I totally see why this guy is such a legend, and I'm really glad I picked up this album.

My favourite part of the cd is the intro riff to "Grace". Incredible.

It's a pleasure playing "Grace" on guitar, absolute genius of a song.

haven't heard a lot of his stuff but from the stuff that I have heard is amazing. One of the best singer songwriters ever , beats the **** out of james blunt and all those other pretenders .

This was certainly an acquired taste to me as an album. I had liked the songs Grace and So Real for a while, but Last Goodbye grew on me too.

Underrated guitar-work, btw...but Buckley's voice is a gift, best vocalist ever.

This album is amazing, So Real is probably my favourite track but they are all so brilliant in every way.

Buckley's vocals are one of a kind.

sorry, cant say i agree that wainwrights version was good. i thought it was a pretty weak attempt, personally.
cohens' original will always be best and although jeff pulled it off- his cover was fantastic, my first thought when i heard wainwrights' on shrek soundtrack was that it was sacrilege.

my favourite on album is lover, you should have come over

cheers..This Message Edited On 12.11.05

I have heard that Toby Driver, singer of Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well sounds exactly like Jeff Buckley. Can anyone affirm or disaffirm this?

Yes, and the one on Shrek was the Rufus Wainwright version.

"Exactly" might be stretching it a bit. But there are some resemblances, I guess.

On the topic of versions of "Hallelujah", for anyone who watches The West Wing, Buckley's version of it is used in the last episode of Season 3...it's used really well actually. I remember hearing it before I got the album and being really impressed.

If I'm not mistaken, it's John Cale (of The Velvet Underground, if anyone didn't know) singing in the actual movie, but Rufus appearing on the sound track...

And yeah, this album is fantastic. I can't believe you didn't rate Lover, You Should've Come Over 5/5 though. It's hands down the best song on the album. So Real is one of the worst, in my opinion, too... :PThis Message Edited On 12.29.05
