Paradise Lost's best album, and one of the best metal albums of all time, Icon, has a very homogenous feel. That's not a downside to the album. This is their best since Draconian Times.

This is their best since Draconian Times

To that sentence, I would add this: "and in their own game (Gothic, Icon and Draconian Times)

the 2005 self titled is pretty underrated, sun faded is definitely one of their best songs

I always wondered before the release of this album, just how 'Crucify' and 'Honesty in Death' would either set the standard or match the quality of the rest of the album. When i listened to the album in full the other day, I certainly realised that there was a lot of variety here, not in terms of songwriting or musicianship as such, but the changes in tempo and influences of doom metal, which hasn't been that prominent on the band's last couple of records. That said, most of the album, as usual, is a stab at the gothic and the depressive themes that have always roamed in PL's books, yet what is new here is the heaviness of the guitar work and Holmes' much better handled clean vocals work, which on past albums weren't quite as effective. Certainly one of the finest albums of 2012.

Holy shit this is awesome...can't wait to hear it live next week! I'm kicking myself for not listening earlier. Crucify.

This is one of the few bands that managed to experiment & return to form without sounding forced (*cough* Metallica *cough*).

As long as his vocals don't sound like the new Bloodbath.

Well, since he won't be doing them non stop, maybe they'll be more similar to the 2013 re-recordings of Gothic and Our Saviour. I liked them a lot there.
