This change culminates with the track "Rainmen" which ends up sounding more like Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine than anything else.
Agreed with this. That's probably why I find the song so dull and overlong. It's mostly pure, basic post-rock/shoegaze with all the standard effects tossed in. The song isn't bad by any means, but it doesn't really have their unique blending of styles that makes me enjoy most of the rest of the album.
Also, I just listened to it for the first time and the radio edit >

That excites me, because I just keep looping Rainmen, thinking it was the album's gem and that I shouldn't bother with the other tracks.

Because I have long since learned that not following up on a Willie rec may be a huge mistake, I tried this one out. Unfortunately, I should admit that me and post rock don't get along that well - call me someone with ADD but I often end up finding that noodling and persistent atmospherics (accompanied with a frequent lack of vocals) don't give me much to focus on, cause me to usually end up distracted or just plain bored (and you kinda neglected to mention that this was a post rock album when you first rec-ed it to me :p).
That being said, although I didn't end up digging Skylight as much as you obviously do Willie, I heard enough to recognize it was a solid release. I'm most impressed by the amount of influences that the band have pulled together for this release. The part where you mention that "with each subsequent track, the band moves further away from the initial post-metal/doom foundation and more towards a melody-and-reverb heavy sound more similar to the shoegaze genre" is particularly spot on, and I tip my hat off to them for that.
So yeah, in another life, AOTY maybe. But for now, I'll agree that there's some solid work on here - it's just that it's not exactly up my street =)

Ha ha, Post rock? I was trying to rec you some metal albums that might ease you into the genre... oh well.
Try that Anacrusis album that I mentioned, Screams & Whispers. It has plenty of vocals and is definitely metal. It's actually technical thrash with a very diverse sound and vocalist to match.

this is very solid Willie - for some reason these guys seem appealing to me though I've kinda moved away from such atmospheric metal territories.
This is different though, I think there's not a bit of exaggeration here and the production is tight without any pompous orchestral arrangements that usually mess the whole thing up. The album's atmosphere is inviting somehow

Title track's clean vocals are amazing and Rainmen is really dreamy. Gonna get this, sounds promising, sounds like an album thats best heard all the way through too.

best post rock album i have heard this year.

I've always thought post-rock was a bit silly and never gave me anything to focus on...never had any
real hook...and kill me, but I think Isis is the worst of them, but this album's pretty great so far.
The more audible vocals are a lot like Amorphis but less cheesy.

I enjoyed reading this review so much that I decided to join up and comment on it. 10/10 on the review, mate. I know very well what it feels like to search after that sense of amazement and not finding it. After your description of this album I thought I had to check it out.
After hearing it, I also think it's a great album. It surprised me since I never really heard anything like it. I was quite pleased when 'Bermuda Riviera' came on. The mood got really dark and the electronic tunes accentuated it so well! I think that's my favorite track. The only thing I did not like, and I know it's nitpicking, is the transition between this song and Resonance. I felt like I could've used a pauze or something quiet in between. Other than that, I really enjoyed the post-rocky vibe of Saturn & I and the female vocals in Cloud Nine.
