Review Summary: Not exactly sure what this is, but it jams really damn hard

Skeleton of God are an old school death metal band from Colorado. They released a couple of strange death metal EPs in the early 90s that are worth hearing if you like different takes on death metal that came out in the early days. They were a good listen to me, but it didn't quite prepare me for the band's debut album released almost 15 years after forming. The early EPs were mostly standard death metal/grind with some odd bits here and there, but this album, Primordial Dominion, is a completely different beast.

This is a concept album and a homogeneous combination of several genres like death metal, grind, death-doom metal, and psychedelic rock. This album can be blistering fast at times, but it also slows to a doomy crawl through a lot of the record. While they are dooming away you have these ethereal guitar solos soaring over the doom riffs. The keyboard effects used throughout give the whole album a trippy, psychedelic feel. The vocals tend to be a combination of two types: a mid-range raspy shriek, and a very low guttural growl. The production is very good and the instruments, vocals, and effects are very clear and pleasing.

This album was one hell of a listen, and I've been spinning it quite a lot. It's like a sexy, crushing ride through the illusions of life.

indeed man. you're welcome. first listen this was a 4-4.5. multiple listens later i was like you know what this is a future classic album. I haven't gotten bored of it yet, the riffs, the solos, the effects, the vocals, the drumming, the production, every damn thing about this album jams and is totally different. i was half-expecting some dumb shit or be let down but after hearing it i was blown away.

Need to relisten to this, been a while. I wasn't nearly as ecstatic about it as you are though. Maybe I'll dig it more now.
