i mean typically skrillex has been like generally okay to listen to, right?

Yeah, I think people here can only take so much though and part of that might be due to Deviant being staff; he's helped push better dubstep on the Sputnik masses.

I think I'll try and make some wubby music once I get a decent laptop, see how hard it can be.

Noisia for the win though.

It can be done rather easily using Reason, but ease of production =/= good tracks or wubs.

of course reviewing it may or may not require listening to it, which may or may not result in permanent scarring of the ear canal

The problem is that he's consistently putting out tunes that use the same gimmicks over and over again. SM&NS was what really got him his popularity, and I can see why. I liked it. It was a really fun mix of electro and dubstep that had never quite been made as accessible as that. His next EP was just something to feed the hungry fans but didn't do anything new.

Now this comes along, and not only is his entire sound extremely tired at this point, but he almost seems like a parody of himself now. He's pushed all his gimmicks to the extremes, where his really loud but somewhat controlled drops have been traded out for repetitious high-pitched "SQUEE"s and any sense of creativity on here comes from guest appearances.

But even then, Skrillex does everything he can to destroy the creative input. Devil's Den is fucking cool as shit for 30 seconds, and it's very clearly all wolfgang gartner at that point. Then it just becomes a really shitty song because skrillex decided it needed to be really loud and obnoxious, and adds so many unnecessary "Yoi"s around the 1 minute mark (as if "yoi"s have ever been cool), and then at 2:45 lets out something that is genuinely more painful to listen to (literally, hurts my ears) than anything else.

It would be a bit sad to see someone who started off so promising turn into such shit if his fanbase didn't actually seem to be growing quickly with all his pathetically derivative releases he comes out with now.

ok this might end up too long but...

i don't really get this, or most of the non-deviant criticisms of skrillex. i DO understand not liking the way his songs sound, so if that's you and your reason for 1-ing this is that simple, then stop reading and meet me in emery thred...

for the others: i (despite being in on skrillex reasonably early in his career) am obviously largely uninformed when it comes to dubstep (or for that matter, all electronic music) as a whole... so i guess there's not much I can argue about but here's the way i think abou tits:

1. i don't listen to these songs like i listen to other songs. it's the same way i think about rap.. when i listen to most songs, I'm in it for the feelings... the head bobbing, foot tapping, etc. When I listen to rap, i want to laugh, or be entertained... the best rap is really theatrical and entertaining and tells a ridiculous story.

When i listen to Skrillex, i just like hearing weird sounds fitting together. I like to jerk my head around like im havinga seizure. I like the way girls go all limp dancing to it. I don't think about gimmicks or whether he earned his popularity... if he evolved, he could evolve into something boring... whatever i get that its bad and a perversion of "real electronic music" but i'm sorry i can't pretend i was ever a fan of "real electronic music."

2. again maybe this is just me, but I thought that, for electonic artists, since sounds are so easily imitable (because these songs can be reverse engineered by just about anyone with the right computer programs) that there would be some elevated incentive to NOT evolve... or in other words, once you have a signature sound (even if you weren't the first one there, but maybe just a sound you've come to be known for) it becomes a cornerstone for perfecting one's craft in a way thats different for other genres... whereas a metal band that cleans up their shit for their major label studio debut are insta-sellouts compared to those who thrash hard till they death, and rappers who dilute their lyrical content to fit broader audiences lose all their kick, someone like skrillex probably has an incentive to build his frat party legacy as best he can because NOBODY even knows what the next step of selling out actually is for "music" like this...

I don't think anyone is arguing that this isn't "real electronic music" or whatever, even though there are those that refuse to accept this as being dubstep/dubstep affiliated because that would connect it to the UK sound. and they don't want that. But all immaturity aside, I think most people detest this and Skrillex's music (not the artist himself) because it seems as if he's merely trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The problem is that his music follows the obvious stereotypes of the genre to a tee, to the point where it becomes borederline laughable

As for the second point, no one is expecting him to all of a sudden churn out some trip hop or whatever, but it'd be nice to see him evolve outside of the one-dimensional template he employs on every single track to the point where one becomes indiscernible from the next

no no dude u kno what i mean by "real electronic music" lol it's like saying avenged sevenfold is "real metal"... it's just a silly purists argument either way, but skrillex being on the wrong side of it definitely affects how people on a site like sputnik will receive him. The second part (lowest common denominator): that's spot on...

No I get the "purists argument" pov, but I've always seen it applied specifically to dubstep. Are you simply adding "electronic music" as an extension of that, or is this a real argument somewhere?

This WILL end up too long, so feel free to ignore if you have no interest.

I agree with you that having a defining sound isn't a bad thing on its own. It's that he's re-using everything and tweaking it very slightly, and he's tweaking it for the worse. Every song structure, every effect, every transition has been done before by him multiple times. SM&NS was cool because he hadn't already done all that before. Now when I hear a melodic build- up to some youtube sample and then a big yoi-induced drop, it's kind of just a "here we go again" thing for me.

Both his build-ups and drops (which are pretty much all a lot of his songs consist of) are worse now too. SM&NS the song had an infectious melodic build. The drop was dynamic, it had some nice high-end and low-ends counteracting each other and it didn't just repeat. It changed a lot, entering 4 on the floor patterns for a measure or two and generally just did some cool things. It also was sweet to hear the main melody enter to drop out for the bassy part a few times.

Now you have tracks like Kyoto where the drums in the drop stay at the most basic half-step pattern for the entirety, and the melodic aspect is just an obnoxiously squealing single note being pitch bent a bit over and over. It isn't dynamic, cool, or new. It's just annoying. "Yo Skrill drop it hard" isn't doing him any favors either. And Right In isn't much better (though it is, a little bit). But the thing is he's even used that shitty trick tons of times by now. Check out his Love In Motion remix or his Cinema remix.

All his attempts at variation are failures. Right on Time sounds like someone trying to accomplish something they've heard done successfully before, unsuccessfully. It's some shit you'd hear at a happy hardcore rave where the only reason anyone is enjoying what's playing is because they're rolling balls. The Devil's Den is good when Skrillex clearly has no part in it (the first 30 seconds). Then he absolutely ruins it. What he does at 2:45 is just absolutely laughable. I mean seriously, what the fuck is that?

"Breathe" IS the one redeeming quality on here (oh wait, I meant "Summit"). He's never shown restraint like that in a track, and it's a nice little melodic piece. But the problem is that while the sound might be new and a big step for him (probably not- I'm guessing he'll abandon it completely), it's not new for any of the thousands of artists that have been doing it for a year or so now.

Well he has used restraint like that in With You Friends (Long Drive Mix) but I agree with most of your other points, he needs to do something different, and not fuck it up like he did with Right On Time
