Starting to think Dry Bone Valley is their only truly great pop move, omrts has its moments but that song really delivers on "catchy rock with cool dark lyrics and noodly riffs". It's almost kinda like an old Soundgarden tune or something!

Wonder if this is due for a bump down tho, I figured I would remember more of it off the top of my head after listening to it like a million times

Octopus has no friends is better at that than Dry Bone Valley on this record, I reckon. Once more round the sun has a few contenders too

Great album anyway. Takes me straight back to a very particular time for me in high school

I'm upping my score on this one. Such an underrated release man. Mastodon saved and carried hard commercially succesfull metal in the 00s. Since this came out I frowned when I heard it was their worst, got the Deluxe edition back in the day and nowadays I think this could actually be among their best releases.

definitely unjustly judged on its own merits, it just happens to follow CtS

the funny thing is that both this one and round the sun didn't get the crowds excited but emporor did when it's arguably their worst record

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit when it came out but it has grown off me over time. Some songs / moments on this still bop for sure tho

I listened to this non-stop for a month when it dropped

I don't think I've spun it in probably seven or eight years now

Black tongue is sweet. Spectrelight is good

I remember Black Tongue, Dry Bone Valley, and Spectrelight being cool. Hm maybe it's time.

You're all trippin. This album is a banger from start to fininsh. Surprised nobody mentioned The Hunter track as a highlight here. Scott Kelly's guest vocals plus one of the best solos in their career make that track a Top 10 Mastodon for me.

Once round the sun is their worst by a wide margin for me. It's got a pair of very nice tracks but otherwise it feels uninspired and the most auto-pilot Mastodon album to date.
