I'll admit that shooting deer and hitting dogs with cars isn't that great for lyrics but Daisy itself carries the emotion with those lyrics.

Well if we take all these things and we bury them fast
And we'll pray that they turn to seeds, to roots and then grass
It'd be all right, it's all right, it'd be easier that way
Or if the sky opened up and started pouring rain
Like you knew he was trying to start things over again
It'd be all right, it's all right, it'd be easier that way
Yeah that's fucking horrid... :/

The lyrics are fine. The album just doesn't work as a whole

"The lyrics are fine. The album just doesn't work as a whole"
Completely backwards. This album works as a whole, the lyrics somewhat bring it down.
Edit: Fuck me for not being able to work in quotes still

The lyrics are just super hit or miss. Sometimes their pretty awesome, at other times I question if they aren't just bad on purpose.

Nah I think an album "working as a whole" means that it transcends any of the flaws it may have-like lyrics, instrumentation, emotion etc-and still is able to create something cohesive. This album definitely does that, even tho, to many, it lacks in some areas (lyrics).

He definitely needs to learn some subtlety.

And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand old message.
And I don't know about you but I never get tired of it

I dunno I disagree, I think subtlety is what this record really needs.

I still like it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How darkly the dark hand met his end.
You’re think that no one else is lonesome
you think that you’re the only one.
I want to burn down everything we've begun
I want to kill and eat my young
your sister groans, "are you serpent to the holy throne?"
to me, she's just a dead spy.
