You can't really compare this to Emma though.

idk, I haven't listened to this in a while, so maybe a couple more listens will help me warm up to it.

They really are different beasts, it would be like comparing Spielberg movies like Indiana Jones to Schindlers List, same director but very different in substance and tone.
BTW: Beth/Rest is amazing as well.

Beth/Rest is great, Holocene and Towers are my favourites, though.

underwhelming to me when compared to For Emma [2]

Perth is my favorite, that little buildup at the beginning leading into the vocal harmonization is just fucking magnificent

Wash. is my favourite here.

I don't find the same amount of satisfaction as I used to with this album, but I used to love Perth a lot, too. Still great.

This album just gets more magical for me as time goes on. I've always preferred it slightly to For Emma.

i do think this is better than For Emma, but I still prefer Emma. I discovered it during one of the lowest points in my life and it probably helped me more than any other album ever has. I spent WEEKS just listening to Skinny Love on repeat.
This is definitely a better album overall though. The songwriting and arrangements are just impeccable.

I think about half of this album outshines the other half, whereas I still find For Emma magical from beginning to end. But I can see how people might think otherwise, this is still great. Wash, Holocene, Beth/Rest. Beautiful.

I prefer this to For Emma, love the textures on this and you get the feeling he's experimenting outside his comfort zone

definitely. but emma seems more sincere and emotional, it's certainly more heartfelt than this

'Re:stacks' is still my favourite of his songs, the emotion is incredible, but if you sat me down and said 'you've got to listen to one on repeat for three hours' I'd choose this every time
