This album kinda feels more like the b-sides to mezmerize rather than its comapanion. there are some great songs (Visicinty of Obscenity, Soldier Side, Dreaming) and some terrible ones (Kill Rock n'Roll, Hypnotize, She's Like Heroin, Lonely Day).

Also I find it criminal that both SOAD's releases this year have Daron dominantly doing the vocals. HE CAN'T SING!!!! guitar yes, he can do, but it's one thing to sing bad for the sake of having a raw sound. It's another to sing bad while you have an amazingly powerful singer (Serj) whose talent is being wasted.

they split this puppy in half because they thought it would be too ... how should i say, overpowering for a double album, which was a wise choice

I always think of Mezmerize as a ying and Hypnotize as a yang, both balancing each other out. Mezmerize/Hypnotize is basically System of a Down's Use Your Illusion I & II, the only difference being that System of a Down found a better way to end their double album sold separately compared to Guns N Roses (why did they have to write "My World", it sounds like Fred Durst's favourite song). This Message Edited On 11.26.05

wow Dead, that review was fantastic. I think that Hypnotize is far superior to Mesmerize in almost every aspect. And I appreciate you doing it justice.

So, I got the chance to listen to a few of the songs on a MySpace the other day. "Viscenity of Obscenity", no matter how silly it is, was probably the best song of the four. "Soldier Side" was good too, but "Lonely Day" and the other song (forgot the name) were terrible. Now I'm kind of afraid to buy the album, if I ever do.

I have to say the review was very good, but a little too long. I felt that you overloaded me with too much info, but your review was still awesome.

I've recently picked this up, and I must say Im not too impressed. There are a couple songs that register as actual songs, but a lot is gibberish garbage. I do like Soldier Side on this album though, because its a menace of a collection finisher. It has so much more meaning on this album.

I defenatly think this is better than Mezmerize, because this album was more straight foward. Mezmerize suffered from constant mediocrity, where this one its either a good song or bad song. I dont like Darons singing in Lonely Day, but it does have a nice solo. My absoloute favorite song is Attack (Its like an anthem for me...I have to go around screaming "WE ATTACK!"), other faves were Tentaive (should be a single), Holy Mountains and Soldier Side. With all the albums out, this kinda how i feel about the albums
1. Self Titled / Toxicity
2. Steal This Album! / Hypnotize
3. Mezmerize
I dont suggest getting the DualDisc version though...The DVD isnt very informative.

Hypnotize is not as good as Mesmerize imo. The songs dont stick as much as those on Mesmerize. However, the two album cases joining to make one case is a pretty pimp idea! Sorry, I found that part about this release the most fascinating.

I was looking at this on iTunes and apparently many of the songs aren't even three minutes long. :-/

I own it, and love it. It's stronger overall than Mesmerize and way more old-school sounding with stuff like Dreaming, Attack, U-Fig, and especially Vicinity Of Obscenity. Soldier Side gives me chills, and I absolutely love the bouzouki-ish solo and harmonized vox in Hypnotize. Lonely Day has probably the worst lyrics of any SOAD song ever, but I love the shred solo, it's about time Daron cut loose a little. Solid, excellent album.
