"idk how casa can argue for mdm's shitness compared to thrash by postulating that it turned down the aggression. like how is that a good argument"

I never argued this, by the way. My most consistent problem is that it's often just thrash and/or trad/power metal's compositional leftovers. It takes from those two genres and is often worse than both while maintaining this unconvincing veneer of also being a part of death metal in many circumstances.

That said, there is enjoyable material that's not even in the vein of what Knick mentioned before that has pretty involved riffing and is generally more interesting. Estuary - Craft of Contradiction immediately comes to mind. I'd even consider it outstanding.

They also did an album called The Sentencing when they were called Estuary of Calamity which was pretty neat too.

If there's anything I'll take from this thread it's stuff to look into that I haven't gotten to yet. If someone that really dislikes melodeath says it's good then I'll probably love it. :P

Nice to see other people who appreciate both this and their earlier work.

Without this album, third wave Metalcore would've sounded much different for better or worse.

i think the only reason this gets more backlash than it rightfully should is that it inspired 2000-2007 mallcore

it's become underrated over time because of what it spawned. blinded by fear is goated.

Whether you like this or not, at least we can (hopefully) all agree that Alf leaving the band was one of the biggest tragedies in music.

Idk why people seem to think this was the spawn for all of generic mallcore, idk how much every Asking Alexandria wannabe scenie weenie was thinking hmmmmm I can't wait to jam "Under a Serpent Sun" today hmmmm

If anything the scene would beget more of its own through its own with sommmewhat traceable melodic dm origins.
