and yeah, mxc is good, genres shouldn't be ranked on their ability to churn out piles of nonsense, they should be ranked by the amount of good shit available

"good, genres shouldn't be ranked on their ability to churn out piles of nonsense, they should be ranked by the amount of good shit available"

this is silly + amount of good shit should always be proportional. if you don't look at genres holistically, you end up in silly silly scenarios like you and ryus claiming metalcore is one of the better heavy genres while sporting 2s in this same thread. SOTS ripoffs, hot topic core and whatever chugs per minute prog jank are far more defining genre hallmarks (in terms of the number of people they've reached) than the botch/coalesce/cave in/7A7Ps you're gauging it by. all in favour of bandwagoning (most of) those, but claiming they're an appropriate yardstick for mxc is like saying you fuck with pop music because the beatles and beach boys are alright

idk Johnny I read ALL of your (completely unnecessary) comment and I stand by my calculations... because honestly, I don't care...

why would I judge a genre based on a whole heap of shit I actively avoid and have easily been doing so for the longest time? It doesn't change what I think about good core. So yes, genres should be judged on their high points. Now of course, if said high points amount to such a miniscule selection of material that it's barely worth mentioning, then no, that's very different - but that isn't the case here

>why would I judge a genre based on a whole heap of shit I actively avoid and have easily been doing so for the longest time?

...because that genre contains a heap of shit that you actively avoid???

>It doesn't change what I think about good core

nor should it? but if your judgement of metalcore was entirely predicated on your shifting the goalposts to focus on your opinion of good core then um you would have to decent thing and rephrase to My Favourite Parts Of Genres And Why and drop the pretence that you were really ranking wholesale genres

>Now of course, if said high points amounts to such a miniscule number of material it's barely worth mentioning, then no, that's very different - but that isn't the case here

you're old enough to understand how proportional distribution works

I'm ranking genres on their high points because I couldn't care less if genre x is consistently okay but has very little top-shelf material... why would that matter to any reasonable person? Especially if the 'worst stuff' is easily predictable beforehand and therefore avoidable in the genres I do enjoy.

I'm not moving any goalposts, this is my criteria and always has been

let's not try and somehow make this statistically measurable, lol

"why would that matter to any reasonable person?"

...because what you're suggesting is underpinned by a heavily blinkered assumption that the only music that matters is the Absolute Best Thing Ever and suggests a brittle quality standard that belies that all music is situational and any given genre's ability to cater to a given mood/setting/function is often more important than its Best Thing Ever factor

and also that i personally jam enough genres with shit I'd consider perfect that the top end alone is inadequate for a full ranking, but if that ain't you then mbad

"let's not try and somehow make this statistically measurable"

i don't think it's a hot take to suggest that for things you can't measure quantitatively, you are going to have a more reliable snapshot of quality if you entertain more than one perspective on it? this is kinda how criticism works
