This is about as good as Sunbather if not a tad better on first couple spins. Certainly a tighter overall listen and the post-rock sections are gorgeous.

Also their drummer is insane.

It's more consistent but nowhere near the heights of Sunbather's bookends. Those tracks drive me mad, this is great but it won't ~change you~

Interesting, my thoughts so far are the four main tracks on Sunbather are about equal with the title track slightly edgeing out the others. Initially I liked how the interlude tracks varied the pace on Sunbather but I think I prefer the focus of this one. Vocals are a bit better here too, they seem more emotive and less tacked-on.

imo both albums are God-tier, RtJ is just subjectively better. Deafheaven picked up some unnecessary filler with Sunbather and moreso with NB and this new album in attempt to create atmosphere and it's honestly just boring

One thing’s for sure these guys know how to get an amazing guitar tone.

too bad they execute it rather poorly with NB and Ordinary.

I found the vocals on Sunbather monotonous at first but a few listens later I realized they're very communicative. He's persistent but adds nuances that channel the complex emotional state of that record. Dream House in particular is a barrage of vocal and melodic hooks, I liken it to a poppy take on blackgaze.

damn bro u fucking right. the vocals on RtJ are for sure monotonous through-and-through. however, it bleeds so fucking well with that wall of sound. you can tell on Sunbather his vocals got a lot tighter sounding with that bansheee highs n shit. pairs well with that blackpopgaze

I remember reading on here (or maybe somewhere else idk) that RtJ is for the winter, Sunbather for the summer.

Only listened to this one time (starting their discography with this one) and damn this seems like my kind of jam. The vocals didn't bother me at all, given that they are more some kind of background sound

seeing this with Joyce Manor and Touche Amore back in early 2011 was honestly better than seeing Marilyn Manson with NIN and Slayer when I was 12 no joke
