dude once on the SAT (?) there was a passage from upton sinclair where he Does That Same Thing and one of the questions below the passage was about why he does that and one of the answers was essentially "it's ironic" and I was like I. fuckin got this

i first noticed it in late 1800s poetry like Emily Dickinson where a word is just capitalized for no reason and my favorite answer to why is "just 'cause lol" rather than some deep dissection of it

i like the interpretation that it's ironic because it seems to be a pattern in ironic phrasing today as well

hard to say why emily dickinson did anything she did imho, so I'm with you that throwing a comprehensive interpretation at HER employment of capitalization would be odd--this sinclair lewis/upton sinclair/goddammit who was it, been googling for a while passage was def modern-feeling in its sense of using it to make fun of haughtiness (of a character, I think) tho, which was cool to see
