Now now, lets not get snippy. It's a good album if you look at it as even MORE of a Billy Corgan album.

This album is sorely underrated, it has quite a few good songs on it and a couple of great ones.
The sacred and Profane and Heavy Metal Machine are two examples.
And if you listen through one of the worst tracks, (glass and the ghost children, I think) it has some pretty interesting dialogue, if dialogue in songs is your kind of thing

I don't think this record is as bad as it's made out to be. It's not great either but I think if Virgin had let Corgan release it as a double album as originally planned it would've been better. Alternatively if you nix a few songs from Machina I and mix it with Machina II you get a really good album.

this IS a good record. because this record ties in with SP in general - it is all about them, the concept etc. So TBH if you call this record shit you call SP shit...
that's just the way it is. And besides, it rocks anyway, the first four tracks are such a good start to an album, its the sound of a band that's perfected several sounds and are now melding them and doing their own thing.
Everlasting gaze = my fave pumpkins tune, and look at every song on the album... ok, i agree, some ARE boring, but none of them are actually BAD songs, they're all good melodies, presented well, each track is given intro verse chorus verse etc structures with any other parts necessary for each song
Basically, the fact this guy has given it 2/5, and overall it gets 3.5/5, but this negative review comes up first, sums up everything about Machina and about Pumpkins.
i wish corgan could read this thread!

So...this is actually really good. Can't see why it's rated so low here.

Stand Inside Your Love is so Goooooood

Yeah. I also think this album slays apart from a few songs.

It is rated low because the Pumpkins made better music than this. An overall rating of 3 is an accurate indicator of what you can expect to find here. Not a bad album, but I feel Billy was really afraid to move on after the warm reception to Adore, and decided to return to safer ground. There are a lot of bland, long, and overproduced songs to allow a higher rating.
However, it is refreshing to see people thinking higher of it. Machina II was a much better work.

Machina would have been *such* a better album if II was released along with it. I'd kill to at least hear Machina II re-mastered, much less how the double album would have turned out. Machina is great.

also machina will be release as a double album at some point of the next year

Yeah with the reissue of the album as a double album hopefully people will enjoy it a bit more. The production and approach for Machina was awful compared to earlier albums, though there are a few songs I wouldn't change the production on like Stand Inside Your Love and This Time.

a good album; not their best one, a bit overproduced, yet solid and coherent; a couple of really great tracks along with many good ones; they could have shortened it and get rid of 2 or 3 weaker songs but they rather dont shade the good points of this somehow convincing effort; i really enjoyed the sound of machina though i know that extensive use of synths may bring totally opposite feelings than mine; still, rating this album a two is a little unfair in my opinion;

try, try, try belongs to adore rather than machina, but I still hate the song

No one in their right mind can Dislike Wound, The Sacred and Profane, With Every Light, Stand Inside Your Love, The Imploding Voice or This Time. There is one bad song on here, Heavy Metal Machine. I'll say that that song is mediocre but it doesn't really matter when you have so many breathtaking songs surrounding it. Honestly if that song wasn't on here, I might 5 this. It's that good.
