Suffers from the same problem as a lot of mid/late 90s albums in that there is just way too much stuffed into it. Everyone felt like they had to fill 70+ minutes of music on a CD just because it could hold it. If they cut out The Imploding Voice, Heavy Metal Machine, Glass and the Ghost Children, The Crying Tree of Mercury, and Blue Skies Bring Tears, the album would be a tight 10 tracks with no filler. But the aforementioned songs just drag stuff out so much. They plod along and don’t really have any memorable aspects to them that make you want to go back and listen. Heck, if they threw in either version of Speed Kills instead of any of those it would have been an improvement (and the vinyl release of Machina did include it in a slightly shuffled final quarter of the album). I also think with less deadening production Heavy Metal Machine could have been salvaged as well. End of the day, Machina is better than the reviews at the time credit it. It has some of SP’s finest and most underrated songs, but Billy definitely torpedoed the album’s commercial chances by letting his ambition get the better of him.

i get why people single out Heavy Metal Machine but to me it's kind of a necessary moment on the album otherwise Everlasting Gaze would sort of be the only "heavy" track on the album
that being said there's definitely a better version of this album ready to be made consisting of, if nothing else, the "Arising" version of Blue Skies Bring Tears as well as SIYL b-side version of "Speed Kills," possibly even the relatively newly-unveiled acoustic-ish version of Glass & the Ghost Children somewhere in the proceedings
