Eh bloc I strongly disagree with the "compression helps certain music" idea, I believe there is a misconception about how compression would make the music "hit harder" because it really only slams you against the metaphorical brickwall by flattening it into a wall of sound. If uber compressed music still had the same volume as dynamic music then I'm sure many people would notice how flat it sounds.

Btw Gore does steal the show when he wants to agreed, like in Macro.

I don't feel that way about many albums, but I started listening to this album long before I ever knew what brickwalling and compression was. It could just be me being soooo used to how this album sounds I'm trying to justify the loudness haha

Gore writes almost all the shit so he's a god no matter what, but Gahan is literally my favourite vocalist of all time.

Just take a bite from a russian tracker or something haha.

And yeah Gahan has that sweet sweet dark chocolate voice. I don't remember where I read it described this way but I always use it now.

Is it for the production talk? I'm placing a face-down card just in case.

Well people can make fun of black metal as much as they want but Taylor Swift on CD/digital has like half the dynamic range of original early Darkthrone and Burzum.

Also rough/organic recordings are much more palatable to me than overproduced clinical sounds, even when compressed.

So, I attack your life points with a 1st press CD of Soulside Journey with DR14.

But what about modern lo-fi stuff?

I'm curious because you seem to know a lot about it and I know nothing.

Hahah thanks for the kind words Pika but technically I don't know jack beyond surface-level. I'm just passionate about this stuff because it's so hard to ignore it once you start to grow an ear for it and sometimes I can't refrain from bringing it up.

"But what about modern lo-fi stuff?"

Like?

"Filosofem"

Yeah I like it too, somehow it has a certain headroom in its abrasive thickness. The guitars are sharp, the drums are crisp and have weigth, the keyboards are clear... it's actually somewhat relaxing for me.

Okay, here we go:

Paysage D'Hiver - all the releases were cassette exclusives until a few years ago.

Darkspace - check the latest one

Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters

Mare Cognitum - An Extraconscious Lucidity

Earth and Pillars - Earth II

I'm not asking you to listen to these in full. And they aren't that modern - some of the stuff was released in 00s. Just want to know what you think about the sound.

I'm not against the use of recording/mixing to follow a certain aesthetic so I'm not particularly bothered by the sound of any of them, I just wish they had a good dynamic range because they'd simply be much more enjoyable to listen to (I'd be curious to hear vinyl rips in the chance they had a better source file). Which is the same thing I say about everything anyway. Just saying, Taylor Swift's latest album on CD/digital has more or less the same dynamic range as the average of what you named. Use this info as you wish.

Martin could you please STOP making songs for sex sessions?. I want more music for the masses depressive shit, not music that strippers would use.

Ugly stuff like tape hiss aside they should be about on par, and both are inferior to digital formats. In theory we should live in paradise today.
