I struggle to see the hate for this compared to the preceding releases. Sure, it's not as fresh, urgent, or arresting as Travels or the EP but it's still more of the same, which is really fun melodic hardcore/post-hardcore with peak drumming, catchy riffs, and a well realized, emotional narrative. I usually ignore the acoustic side, also.

It just kind of loses steam the further into the album it gets. The first 3 tracks are outstanding but after that it begins to fall off a lot

Just a taste thing at that point, I guess. Some of my fav tracks on this are actually Empty Glass (masterfully tasteful drums lead the whole track) and Cemetery Walls.

Right? And the really pretty bit with the guitar harmonics gets me every time.

S/T was pretty good imo. They went out on a high note at least

Letters Home and Abandoned really aren't as bad as people make them out to be either

I never really cared for the acoustic tracks, but barring that i consider it my favorite. White Oak Doors is like top 3 Defeater for me, and 'At Peace' is really underrated too

Letters Home has some real standouts, but everything after this mostly sounds like a severely watered down version of their sound

also i'm so sad they never did a anniversary tour for this album

Letters Home had Bastards, Blood in My Eyes, and Rabbit Foot. All bangers.

I've come to really dig Letters Home. Abandoned is still in one ear and out the other though

Did they break up?

Letters Home was pretty nice in a vacuum, just an example of diminished returns. The highs are really high though. Abandoned definitely found them spinning their wheels though.

Defeater get a lot of hate in a similar manner to Deafheaven (though not nearly as influential, obviously) in that they deliver some really damn good music wrapped in aesthetics that are antithetical to whatever those genres are ostensibly about. The whole concept thing for them is a bit gimmicky at times (specifically, Abandoned really strains for purpose) and I do think they locked themselves in a bit by sticking to the same group of people, but I'll be damned if their storytelling ability isn't refreshing and pretty good, all things considered. Most hardcore lyrics are basically Live Laugh Love for the worst kind of straight edge guys, so the band sticks out even with sticking to the same storyline again and again.
