Is this just distortion crescendo abuse like mono or does it actually have good songwriting? Peepin that average

WEG was in-between The Lie Lay Land and Hurtbreak Wonderland, both neo-classical/post-rock/idm masterpieces, and Mono had just released You Are There.

Its more like GYBE than a typical Mono record. There are no real crescendos either. The review described it well as an immense hypnosis of grief.

Hmm, I've never heard WEG but you have me intrigued. I think mono are actually quite capable when they're not in caught up in some endless crescendo + GYBE style is my kinda post-rock

I feel this. 'Hymn' is one of my favorite albums of all time, but it sucks to see a band like Mono who were front runners for the loud-soft crescendo not develop their sound and continuously put out the same fucking album over and over.

I definitely recommend you check this and WEG's Hurtbreak Wonderland. I don't believe there to be a more fitting time than now for this album, as it is truly a pit of despair and melancholic beauty to the point where it can feel almost suffocating. however, it is *heavily* influenced by classical instrumentations/movements, so I can see people finding it boring

Tbh I thought 'Hymn' was the chief offender for that style as it set the precedent and its success is seemingly why they haven't changed, but I'm definitely open to this and WEG as I think mono have a lot of potential with some outside influence! Will throw it on if this nice weather packs it in, its a bit too sunny here atm for how this album is described lol

I remember getting this on a whim when it was released, mainly because of the great cover art and curiosity of a Mono collab. It’s easily their best work in my view and totally transcends the quiet/loud dynamic that they’d been pursuing, as well as some of the often on the nose concepts of more recent releases. I really wish they’d continued on this arc, but maybe this collab was just lightning in a bottle.
