That documentary is awesome. This guy seems cool but very troubled obviously.

I don't care if it considered below average, it was the first black metal artist I really liked, but probably because of the good use of ambient elements in it. I really like his first, A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors.
I like some bands with BM influences like Agalloch - The Mantle and Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape.
I don't like raw or really aggressive black metal, but I'd really like recommendations for other ambient black metal bands / artists.

Hmmmmmm, try these: (all BM with strong ambient focus)
Carpathian Forest - Journey Through The Cold Moors Of Svarttjern
Kataxu - North
Forest Silence - Eternal Winter
Evilfeast - Elegies of the Stellar Wind
Hajduk - Природа (green EP)
Darkeater - Что помнит лес
Mightiest & Depressive Silence - Recreation of the Shadowlands (Split)
anything from Elffor

@Garas: Big thanks for that!
Also, about what the reviewer wrote I know Xasthur's albums are never very original and ground-breaking, but those 2 things aren't the most important things for me in music, there are albums I consider a near classic or even a classic because of different reasons why I love those albums. An album being ground-breaking or influential and loved by many people alone doesn't make me like or love the album instantly.

Anytime! ;]
And I feel you, I often find myself in the same situation. But that is completely okay, we are all different and have our very own taste.
For example, from Xasthur I like the 'Suicide in Dark Serenity' the most - and most probably I'm alone with this opinion.

Yeah not just our own taste, also our own music world, where we have our own "legendary" albums and bands!
Also what's a pity, there are plenty of albums and artists that didn't exist on here that I had to add, many albums that are really amazing only have a rating from me. This is really a shame because there are so many great albums buried deep down in the internet. Well, when I was user on last.fm at least there some of the bands that are unknown here sometimes had over 20.000 listeners.

"Yeah not just our own taste, also our own music world, where we have our own "legendary" albums and bands!"
Yesyesyes! Absolutely!
And again, I feel you man. Lately like every second album I rate is added to the database by me. But I try my best to share them around here because as you said: "there are so many great albums buried deep down in the internet".

I was in my mid-teens when the first few Xasthur and Leviathan records dropped and I remember them getting an insane amount of hate. American Black Metal was really looked down on around that time, but I always thought this stuff ruled, especially this album.

He's not feeling it anymore. Idk, writing too much dark folk garbage took his "edge".
