I think that history has been rewritten somewhat on that front, this was waaay after the most tense parts of missile crises occurred and it strikes as weird revisionist scare-mongering

i just don't understand how you can listen to a lyric like 'acrid stench and festering tongue / new york, moscow, nairobi in flames' and not think it contrived at best and excruciating at worst. I know there's a lot to love about Deceit but there's something that niggles eh.

(Eyesore is gr8 but CHINA STEPS/DRAG OPEN Y'ALL)

I only listened to this once so dun feel bad

It was good though it really was. I don't remember why exactly this is supposed to be similar to Deceit doh

it isn't similar aesthetically but definitely reminiscent of deceit in terms of worldview. creating discomfort is a primary concern on both records. i think it's a worthwhile comparison.

lmao this and Deceit are chalk and cheese tbh and i wouldn't say this album is about creating discomfort at all, although i can see where you're coming from at a pinch - it has that alienating, removed quality that reminds me of Spiderland, actually, but it's not hostile

yeah actually spiderland is a pretty solid comparison for the guitar work in a lot of ways, although women draw from loads of cool guitar work on a bunch of cool guitar albums. that's definitely one of them though. i also disagree with your assertion that women weren't hostile, and that slint were. spiderland is more isolated and paranoid than hostile, it almost feels like you're being invited into spiderland's fucked up sense of space, whereas i think this record is far less inviting. part of the reason public strain rewards repeated listening is because they tried so hard to keep the listener at arms length i think. it's like you have to work hard to get inside of their sound. tl;dr no one cares etc.

OH sorry i meant that i think This Heat is hostile, definitely agree that Spiderland isn't. I know exactly what you mean actually - i mean there are some tracks that instantly click (can't you see a.k.a the calm before the storm, heat distraction, penal colony etc) but don't reveal their deeply-buried depths until later so yeah i think we can all agree spectacular album

in that case i agree with you. idk if y'all have listened to the bbc radio session this band did but if not, you should. the recordings are pretty fucking cool, makes me feel bad that i'll never see them perform. idk why i don't go back to them more often.

i don't have much to say about the viet cong tour cassette, it's more straightforward post-punk and i didn't find it too memorable, but people whose taste i trust regard it highly. definitely give it a listen. this new shit from them on the other hand is practically women-incredible:
