I still think this is quite unfocused, but it's way more interesting than, let's say, The Mountain

The Mountain is where it's at, but this is so close to my heart, a stellar deubt, much better than Vsisions

I find every song distinctive, their ideas and vision (ha!) seem to fully flesh out, songs are honestly interesting, great melodies, great vocals, stellar production, kinda meh concept, but lyrics are decent. I think I find something big to take from evey song on The Mountain

They streamlined their sound and their songwriting improved quite a bit, I guess. But I think it too clean and honestly, songs like Falling Back To Earth and Pareidolia are quite boring imo. TM is their most frustrating album for me. I actually dig Because It's There.

Also Ross' vocals are a weak point imo.

Nah, Affinity is more interesting and fun. Same for Vector.

Affinity is soooo underrated, and it might actually be my second favourite after the Mountain (third is Aquarius oc). Ross's vocals are always decent on tape, tbh.

You know what? I'm gonna jam The Mountain today to see of my thoughts have shifted.

I am so incredibly ambivalent with this band. Sometimes Aquarius is great and Visions is their best for me. Sometimes I agree that they're unfocused and that Visions lacks its own distinct flavour. I concistently dig Vector (probably their best in general) and Affinity, and would always rank Virus and The Mountain lowest.

But overall, Haken's biggest strengths might be 1) they're pretty good songwriters and 2) they're not that distincive in general, so most prog listeners can kind of agree on them.

I find it hard to say that Virus and Vektor suck, but I don't find them remarkable. Same applies to Visions. Excellent songwriting of course, but not *that* memorable

I actually think Visions is a hard number 2 for me, after the Mountain. So many enjoyable and memorable songs on there, especially the middle segment with Insomnia, The Mind's Eye and Shapeshifter. Still can't really vibe with Vector or Virus. Aquarius and Affinity are middle of the road to me.

It's all quite close though, Haken is pretty much "4, the band" for me.

Visions is very good and underrated imo. But it's a bit too long or too samey for its runtime at least. It could be my favorite if some fat was trimmed

Listened to this again for the first time in like 3 years

Can’t believe the glow up this band had, even on Visions… this one’s kind of bad
