“I genuinely always forget if you’re from L.A or Sheffield.”

I’m certainly more of a “product” of the former than the latter, lol

Born in London tho. Had no family from Yorkshire until I moved here

Demo I was merely stating the fact that most of the Catholic/Christian people I know (and I know quite a few, I was "raised" Catholic and went to a Catholic school from grades 1-8) are massive hypocrites when it comes to practicing their own faith. Seems to regularly be a partial adoption of only the beliefs and mores that don't conflict with their own personal forms of hedonism or whatever else. I'm sure there are good religious people out there. In fact, I know there are. I know some. Even many of the hypocrites are genuinely good people. And frankly I don't care what they do/don't decide to do with their own lives when it comes to following a certain doctrine. I just don't understand it. And I really only have a problem with it when it imposes upon the earthly freedoms of someone else.

I mean to be Christian is, not to be polemical, to be a hypocrite in some way, that's just the nature of sin. I can acknowledge that my shortcomings are shortcomings while also acknowledging that I'm probably not going to overcome those shortcomings on my own. For a Christian, that's where grace comes in.

"Organized religion is irrational but faith isn't."

Well Hawks I'm yet to hear a rational path that leads towards the Abrahamic Judeo-Christian God, that's why I think it's irrational. Which arguments made you think there is a rational path towards the christian god? Aquinas?

"Moral nihilists are high up in the degeneracy ladder"

Moral nihilism must make sense just for people with no intrinsic values as a logical conclusion to the absurd. I myself am an absurdist from an observational/rational point of view, but like Camus said we should rebel against the absurd, and I always felt that some core/"factory" values many people share, like empathy, makes rebeling against the absurd a must.

In that sense I'd rather have christian friends who take their values seriously than moral nihilists tbh. I just can't stand most catholics I've met because, like tectactoe said, they have had a tendency to be very outspoken and political about their faith only to then cherry pick whatever suits their eventual circumstances, which results in hypocrisy too often. I was raised a catholic too and saw this so often I just ended up completely disgusted. I could tell you stories about women who went to protests against abortion after having abortions themselves, men who were very blatant against pre-marriage sex and then were fucking every single weekend...

As much as I dislike American capitalism and its ways, it was during my travels in the USA where I found the best, most genuine christian people I've met in my life.

"slavery, mass murder and pedophilia

this would all exist with or without religion.. dont be naive"

That's absolutely true. I can't stand the idea of religions being the root of all crimes either.

"ironic a band like deathspell omega is more knowledgable about Christianity than the average Christian"

That's common in people that study theology. Actually many christians end up being agnostics or even atheists after studying theology. Can't stop recommending Jesus Interrupted by Bart D. Ehrman

Yes, that is the play on words in my user. Far grosser and cringier than my lack of belief in univeral morals is that I got it from a collection of Nick Land's essays (ew)

Exactly dad, it’s like these buffoons above think being religious means you have to perfect and follow it to a tee. No shit people are going to be hypocrites. It’s impossible to follow the Bible perfectly. That fact is a staple of the Christianity and explained at length in the scripture.

How can slavery, mass murder and pedophilia be systemic in Christianity if there is a higher justice?

Problem is not being a hyporcrite, problem is being a militant hypocrite. You can say you live by whatever you want, and act exactly the opposite. You will be laughable and make a fool of yourself but in the end it should not truly affect anyone. Now trying to ban things, change laws, demonize people and/or pointing fingers while acting exactly the opposite behind the curtains, that's despicable and what I'm refering to.

It’s called freewill. Do you think mass murder, pedophelia and slavery are taught as what you should do in the Bible? It’s man’s interpretation and bastardizing to use it as control which led to those things.
