Raven King hits hard… Ace track, simply heartbreaking. RIP Paul

having that tribute in the middle of an album that's all pretty much, you know... dissent about uhhh world orders and the rape of the planet and population control and chemtrails and what have you was just never gonna work for me, especially considering I haven't got much of any kind of connection with Paul Raven myself outside of knowing him as bass player on Killing Joke's prior albums
I also just find it kind of boring/tedious musically... but maybe it'll click with me some day - of the two tracks that diverge thematically from the rest of the album, I much prefer the next track "Honour the Fire" might be my favorite on the whole record

I think that paul raven was into all that hoo ha and this album is somewhat dedicated to him and his ideals. I know at least the raven king is. Even if I have no connection to the fella, I can only imagine how powerful that song is to the members

>Sowing genuine question: what do you look for in music? The raven king is one of the best things I’ve heard in a while yet you appreciate this album a bunch but didn’t mention it as a highlight. Just makes me think we look at music totally differently and curious what you into. I basically like things to be as enormous, cohesive and creative as possible
realistically i think its smart to assume given any two random people that they look for different things and see things differently... irrespective of training even

Yeah tryna see how others look at it just curious

First time I consciously took note on Paul Raven was for his contribution to Cleansing and Rude Awakening, my favorite albums by Prong. He also played and recorded great albums with Ministry and Zilch, and his presence on stage was just impressive. He was a beast on bass, and his untimely demise shook me quite a bit. That’s probably why I feel such a strong connection to Raven King. But if you never heard of him before I totally get why the song wouldn’t stand out to you in the context of the album.

Crazy how this is Killing Joke’s catchiest album

The trick with the raven king is the volume and bass have to be way up

@TCV15 agreed especially considering most bands are totally petered out by this point in their career

Am I smoking crack or does In Excelsis sound like it could've been a Deftones song?
