I agree that Pale Folklore is a little underdevoloped at places, but nevertheless I can see why it would be your favorite. Every single one of their first 4 LPs is a totally understandable choice as a favorite imo. They're just one of the most consistent bands ever, period.

I love the last album too. About on par with this one for me.

serpent is enjoyable enough on a shallow level but honestly to me it feels like the band isn't completely there you know

The first track on that album is top 5 Agalloch for me. Idk though I honestly don't understand the hate it gets.

it's hard to explain it, the album just feels soulless and rather meandering

I think it's mostly the production that hurts Serpent tbh. It's very odd-sounding, unbalanced in the mix and lacking in atmosphere

I found the first track to be really boring and un-Agalloch-y, tbh Hawks. It's like three minutes of doomy power chords and then five more minutes of doomy metal power chords, and then three minutes of quiet guitaring/Agalloch-lite.

Completely agreed. There are some killer tracks on that record (mainly the 1-2-3 punch of Astral Dialogue, Dark Matter Gods, and Celestial Effigy), but also some incredibly painfully average ones (Vails, Birth and Death). It just doesn't feel like Agalloch to me for whatever reason and doesn't even come CLOSE to connecting with me on an emotional level like the first four did, and I honestly forget that I'm listening to it most times that I try to give it a spin.

The only songs that are really subpar on that album for me are Vales and Plateau. The rest of it is about on par with this album.
