Nah not at all, I get dead middle of winter, somewhere even farther north and more desolate than my homeplace
i don't really get a winter vibe from ashes, in a way that's their "least" seasonal album to me

This album is straight-up frostily. Pale Folklore is more of a snowy album, and The Mantle is misty. As for Ashes, it's ... nightly? I agree that it's their least seasonal album.

Seasonally speaking, Pale feels like a spring/fall crossover, The Mantle is 1000000% fall, The White is 1000000% Spring, Ashes is.... nothing?, Marrow is 1000000% winter, and I haven't been engaged enough by Serpent to say it makes me feel a certain way

ashes is winter for sure. it's their "coldest" sounding imo, not necessarily dark though. idk why but i just disagree with you a lot on this

pf/mantle/marrow are all fairly autumnal by comparison to ashes yea

'i feel ashes is more like a winter album, this gives me more of early spring vibes you know, when it's still cold and dark but the snow is starting to melt'
I agree, Art. I put it on just the other day when it started snowing.

Maybe the best Agalloch.

HYPE IT MARROW'S TIME HAS COME

Marrow has always, always been excellent. People didn't give it a chance since it was such a stark departure from Agalloch's previous sound progression, which had been on a increasingly post-esque arc. Ashes is barely black metal at all, whereas this one is easily their most black metal

"Ashes is barely black metal at all, whereas this one is easily their most black metal"
I agree, it's probably their most metal record.

exactly, and I think it makes perfect sense when viewed as an arc between Serpent and Ashes, since Ashes is post-rock, Serpent is kind of "post-black" and this is solidly black. I think they wanted to make a definitely "black metal" album with the agalloch sound, one that didn't sound like Faustian's second wave worship, and I really think people just didn't want Agalloch to record a black metal album

I agree that there is a lot of actual black metal on here, more than usual, but I wouldn't call it a black metal album either. Black Lake Nidstang and To Drown are barely black metal at all and they amount to nearly half of the album's running time.

black lake has a couple of very bm-y moments though but yeah. actually into the painted grey is the only track here i would easily label as bm

whatever it is, it's great.

hmmm I don't really disagree, but it still feels like a black metal album to me, as opposed to others which lean much more heavily as "folk-black"
I certainly think its their only *album* you could call a black metal album
