Took me a while to figure out what's wrong with this album. I've figured it out. There's not a single pre-chorus.
oh well that must be it then rofl

I like the album. But the lack of a pre-chorus anywhere really holds back the energy from a lot of the songs. It's like, imagine "Work" without the "All I Can Say, I Shouldn't Say" part. It would be without momentum and build, as is the case with a lot of the songs on this album. The song structures are all very safe, except for maybe "Evidence".

"oh well that must be it then rofl"
that was unnecessary

I just think it's a bit silly to put not liking an album down to the absence of a specific structural device. How are the last two tracks on here structurally safe? I prefer Futures to this record and most others I've ever heard but I'd argue it's structurally more predictable than this is. I'm just saying I don't think that's it, at all.

I do like the album -- it's not like I'm saying it goes from a 4.5 to a 2.5 because there aren't any pre-choruses. Maybe I should have worded things differently. It's not that there's anything "wrong" with the album, it just leaves it a bit lacking.

"I'm just saying I don't think that's it, at all."
The defensive tone indicates it was (somewhat) a response to my post, so just to clarify:
You could disagree with his point but the sarcasm + "lmao" was condescending when there wasn't really a place for it.
I do agree with the whole of your point, though. I wouldn't pin what to me is a lack of anything interesting to a lack of a certain structure.

This album is great, can't touch Bleed American or Futures, but I still think it's awesome pawesome.

Album feels like a solid 3.5 after 3 listens. Coffee and Cigarettes is a bit meh.

Actually quite enjoy this record, is a dip in form but they haven't fallen into the abyss of mediocrity just yet

this is the dip in form? what about chase this light? this is totally better than ctl. this is them veeeerry slowly crawling out of a dip. hopefully the next album will be a proper return to form. should be out in the next couple of months too. they've finished mixing and mastering it, they're just waiting to decide how to release without a label.

title track is so good

Well that's fair enough if you think chase this light was their worst, I really enjoyed it though and reckon its not far behind futures and bleed American

Chase this Light is a lot better than this. Only song I really like on this is Coffee and Cigarettes.
Edit: why do I have this at a 3.5? I must have been really generous that day.

chase this light is the worst song they've ever recorded. other than maybe mixtape. cringe town with the vocals on both of those songs. yet they both happened to be beautiful when performed acoustically.
