Seems like it's been too long since I've heard this as I'm surprised I have this at a 4.5

best Enslaved so 4.5 is justifiable, some might say correct, even.

Band rules hard. I'd prolly argue that if we were to do Enslaved discography vs Opeth discography, our Norwegian vikings would win by a comfortable margin.

Opeth have three meh albums (Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress) - Enslaved have none.

Opeth have four good but not excellent records (Deliverance, Orchid, Ghost Reveries, Watershed) - so do Enslaved (Blodhemn, Eld, Mardraum, Monumension)

Opeth have five amazing/classic albums (BW Park, Damnation, Morningrise, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse) - Enslaved have... 10.

It's no good talking to me about this because BWP is my 8th favourite, or something like that anyway. I see Still Life, Morningrise & GR as their classics.

I haven't heard every Enslaved album but a lot of their stuff is in the 3-3.5/5 range for me. Everything came together nicely on this one & the early albums are very good if you like that sound, but a lot of their other progressive albums feel incomplete/half-baked.

Both Orchid and Ghost Reveries are better than E, In Times, Vertebrae, Ruun and Below the Lights and about on par with RIITIIR, AEO, Isa and Frost.

Exactly my thoughts about ghost revs. One of the most frustrating prog metal albums to listen to. It was actually my first album by them (heard it when it came out) and it was the main reason why I didn't get into them right away.

I would say all those Enslaved albums are either better or on par with those two albums. but then again I've never been overly fond of the peth (soz, demon [of the fall])

I've always been more of a fan of Opeth myself and with Enslaved I was stuck in the "first two records above anything else" phase for a long time. I've come to really like a few of Enslaved's later albums as well over time.
Compositionally Enslaved are incredibly creative, but in terms of atmosphere and mood building peak Opeth have got them beat on any of Enslaved's later records imho

I dunno, I feel like Opeth relies way too much on the heavy distorted guitars death riffage vs. slow broody acoustic part dynamics to the point where I'm almost like "oh here we go again with the plonking on the spanish guitar".
