i mean why add stuff to a database that doesn't even have separate fields for performer & composer... i've added hundreds before (because i'm not very bright) and it was a waste of time
|
| |
yes the database could be ten times better and we have some really outdated norms that could do with a total restart
(soundtracks etc are a mess)

Just add the artist as performer(s) Havey. I don't think the composer name is that necessary, especially when it's usually listed on the album artwork.
My main concern is the rating music manuscripts instead of recordings. I doubt most of the people rating classical here have the knowledge to read them so they are obviously listening to a recording of some sought. (me included)

"Just add the artist as performer Havey."
You mean the performer as artist - but who is "the" performer in a recording of e.g. the 1610 vespers? The choral ensemble? The instrumental ensemble? The conductor? We can't often go with all three without exceeding the limit... Pon seems to have preferred both ensembles as artist with the conductor in brackets, but then the alb title char limit becomes a problem. 2 much truncation 4 me
"My main concern is the rating music manuscripts instead of recordings."
yes but you'll never be able to combat this, especially on a rock-centered website like sput... people will want to rate the work "itself" (no such thing) because they need a clearly demarcated canon, too lazy to handle a multiplicity of interpretations...

Alb title char limit is bypassable btw. Yes I'd agree that both ensembles in the artist title would be preferable to the conductor. The database will have incomplete information but so long as it's researchable/the particular recording is easily identifiable I think it's acceptable.
"because they need a clearly demarcated canon, too lazy to handle a multiplicity of interpretations"
Pretty much yes.

Yea text field for album titles is max 50 chars and you can bypass it and submit up to 75 chars - but is it bypassable beyond that? Not that I've found... 75 is still not enough for classical much of the time, many releases don't have unique titles so you'll often find yourself trying to fit a list of work titles into the title field

my original comments didn't survive the nuke, but ctrl+f "seventh wonder" should give you the lowdown

manuscripts gang for lyf
text limit is i believe indefinitely bypassable if you fuck with the inspect element function

^looks like you were robbed tbh
"text limit is i believe indefinitely bypassable"
prove it
when i explored this like 4 years ago i found that the text field limit is 50 chars (bypassable with inspect element) but the actual database wouldn't accept more than 75 chars

i submitted an hour late and was defeated by pedantry, plus to make matters worse the comment fallout means there is no record of the SENSATIONAL polish steampunk narrative i wrote for it
and hmm you may be stuck then. i recall gnocchi destroying the frontpage with a title of well over 75 pages at some stage, so per

oh but 75 chars is def enough to destroy the frontpage, if we're selecting the widest chars available
e.g. "⸻", "﷽"

Green River is the best
Bayou is like 5th?
Green > Cosmo > Willy > Pendulum > Bayou > s/t > obviously Mardi Gras
Pendulum is mad underrated and I don’t understand why
