lets be honest trying to nominate the best lyricist in prog is like trying to find the most athletic kid in the AV club

I'm not sure I understand that analogy, because from what I can tell prog has a lot of great lyricists and I'm clearly the noob of the genre itt.

I don't think prog has specifically bad lyrics. There are a few like ELP and Yes that get bagged on somewhat

fairly, but what genre has all good lyrics? I could sit here and name off stereotypical lyrics from any

genre and they'd all be terrible.

obviously no genre has all good lyrics. while I have literally no problem listening to prog lyrics, they are usually meant to be taken seriously (despite something like hip hop or DM) but end up being preachy, ridiculous and overblown. prog is not the place to look for great lyrics (i hope its obvious that this is my opinion, and not something i'm using to persuade anyone for or against)

Hodgson/Davies are my favorite lyricists in prog

We choose our poison. I prefer lyrics to err on the side of being preachy, ridiculous, and overblown as opposed to fickle, unimaginative, and cliche. A bad drama is just as terrible as a bad comedy.

That's why Hodgson/Davies are my favorites, they mix tragedy and ridiculousness in such an epic way

in retrospect it was an unnecessary comment on my part, cause a good lyricist can be found in almost any genre. its more dependent on the person's writing skills then it is on the sound of their music

Agreed prog is definitely not the best place to look for great lyrics but obviously Tull are a huge exception if you count them as prog. Besides the lyrics on their only two albums I would really call prog are most definitely not meant to be taken seriously and are partly meant to be a parody of the genre, taking the piss out of prog lyrics whilst being ten times better than any other lyrics in the genre when/if you do take them seriously.

I agree Jamie, JT played in my house all the time when I was a kid and I grew to favor the more folk based songs that come later in their discog... it wasn't until years later when I had begun to explore prog that someone had first suggested Tull was a great band in the genre and I scratched my head like "how the fuck is weathercock a prog rock song?". when I re listened to TaaB (esp knowing it was a tongue-in-cheek parody of the entire genre itself) and to a slightly lesser extent A Passion Play, I realized Tull really did deserve being heralded as a great prog act

its funny because my favorite prog lyricist would probably be Waters, who is part of yet another prog band that isn't full on prog

Prog that isn't full on prog is the best prog.

Waters is really the only other prog lyricist I think highly of, although for me he could never hold a candle to Anderson.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway does have great lyrics though, although, again, you could argue that album's not full on prog either.

I've never managed to sit through an entire Genesis album to be perfectly frank, let alone a double album, but I see the appeal. I have SEbtP and The Lamb though and probably should give them another shot

Listen to The Lamb again for sure. It may be long but the individual songs are really quite concise and certainly not typical of progressive rock.

JT has it right, the lyrical style and concept here are overblown as a parody but are still incredibly poetic should you take them seriously (I do take them pretty seriously and this is a fun piece to analyze).
