Should I listen to this? I heard he plays the flute or some other fruity shit.

lol.
That fruity flute melts more face than Slayer dude.

I don't doubt. I will get around to this some time. Should I start here or Aqualung?

Some would say otherwise but I'll always say Aqualung
|
| |
Aqualung is probably a better starting point, despite its inferior production. Minstrel in the Gallery is also good starting point. This one takes a bit more time to get into.

first impression from a casual prog fan who tends to mostly favour the records that crossed over and went massive - 3.5.
|
| |
This has more in common with folk singer/songwriter stuff than it does with most prog rock so I'm surprised this isn't like your
favourite kind of prog given your taste.

much more involved and technical musically/structurally than most (maybe all?) my favourite folk records. so maybe needs some spins to sink in more.
3.5 = very good though. potential to grow. i didn't absorb the lyrics at all but reads like a good concept. hearing the two big early 70s Yes records for the first time too - both sitting at 4.

JT mentioned this one takes some time and I couldn't agree more, there's too much to take on board for a couple of spins trying to 'find' something.
|
| |
Lyrics on here are some of the best ever, definitely up there with Dylan's best but they do take more time to appreciate.
|
| |
If this is your first listen then 3.5 is a very reasonable rating. I'd say this is leagues ahead of the best Yes records though due
to the far superior song writing.

Great story, clever lyrics, incredible music and awesome cover art. Top 3 prog in my book.

yeah ^ well take Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands - alternating verses and choruses. simple accompaniment for 11 minutes that really doesn't change, so the vocals/lyrics are absolute center of attention.
on first impression this had a way more prominent folk influence than I've heard on prog records but it's also pretty musically adventurous like alot of prog around this era.
would help if I stay off the net and listen to it with undivided attention.

"I'd say this is leagues ahead of the best Yes records though due to the far superior song writing."
this is what I'm after and what I struggle with in alot of prog and fusion albums.
