Haven't listened to the album yet but I just got it. Rolling Stone gave it a 3.5 and called it "their most focused album since Core."
You write that Weiland seems unfocused and uncaring throughout, so I'm gonna have to see for myself, but I'm inclined to side with you on this. Rolling Stone's reviews typically have very little to do with the music itself and more what they want the music to be

got the deluxe version and the cd isn't bad but the bonus b-side kicks the shit out of most of these songs, everyone should check it out

Yeah, you might feel differently, but I just found that Scott just seems to be going through the motions. Sort of hard to take them seriously when this happens.

I don't see how this can be considered a "grunge album" outside of the fact that STP is a "grunge band." But wouldn't it just sound stupid if the band, much older and much less fucked up, attempted to make music sound like it did when they were all strung out on drugs and snarling? I'm enjoying it, though its a little poppy and the production is too fresh

That's actually an interesting point. What it came down to for me was whether or not the band put everything they had into the album, and if the record came off as a compelling collection of songs. Neither of those things happened imo.

So yeah that bridge in Between the Lines is the most blatant rip-off of anything I've ever heard (Nirvana - Stay Away).
On the second song and this will probably be a 3 or a 3.5.

I went and listened anyway and I am not too impressed

pretty much my initial reaction and it hasn't changed

Bought the album today and I'm pretty hooked on it which pleasantly surprises me. After hearing a few tracks I prepared myself for disappointment but I'm honestly really enjoying it.
There isn't a single shred of either 'Core' or 'Purple''s sound on this album. This is definitely a throwback to 'Tiny Music...' and 'Shangri La Dee Da.' Although I wouldn't have minded a heavier, 'Down'-esque track on the album ('No. 4' kicked ass).

In no place in the review did I say this sounds like Core or Purple.
|
| |
"Stone Temple Pilots is a dull attempt to rehash the glory days of Core, Purple, and even Tiny Music…"
May want to edit that bit out then to avoid confusion.
|
| |
That was pertaining to their acclaim and not the sound, but I guess its been taken the wrong way the entire time.
