Steal This Album gets a fair amount of bad press. A lot of people say that it is just an odds & ends album that they just put together for kicks, but I beg ot differ. I believe that it is a definite underrated classic and is as complete as some of their more well publicised efforts such as Toxicity and Mezmerize.
It starts out with the astonishing "Chic 'n' Stu", a furious, quirky metal tune that is seemingly about pizza toppings?! (No Toto, we're not reviewing U2 now) But is in fact about advertising and companies manipulating customers. In fact, Steal This Album is full of cryptic hidden messages and weird nonsense lyrics. For example, the epic "Mr. Jack" contains lines such as "is that the mousthwash in your eyes?" You may not know what the hell Serj and the boys are on about, but you can feel that they're on about something vital.
However, some of their (even) more political numbers are a lot more direct. For example "A.D.D.", a song that could easily fill up Twickenham Stadium is a mid tempo tune that can be harrowing and direct at different times. It has lyrics such as "the remainder is an unjustifiable, egotistical power struggle at the expense of the American Dream". That's definitely not cryptic or nonsense. That's DOWN. TO. EARTH.
Then there are my personal favourites. The amazingly ethereal "Ego Brain", "Roulette" and "Streamline" which have the right combination of thrash, elegance, weirdness and catchy hooks. They are the jewels in Steal This Album's crown.
There are songs on here that can and will be filed under "silly". "Pictures", "36" and "IEAIAIO" are the main ones, mostly because of the vocals. "Pictures" has Serj doing what I think is a chicken impression, "36" is just random and "AIEIAIO" has an Eastern European choir and nonsense lyrics. F**k The System is just well... I dunno. But this doesn't make them less top quality songs.
I love this album. The production is brilliant - it has a good balance of gritty and clean. These are also tracks that they couldn't fit on other albums (Toxicity?) or they weren't allowed to put some tracks on. So if these are the rejects, then imagine what the cream of the crop sound like!

Whoa. I gotta disagree.
This album is the worst by the band in my opinion. i can only stand a few choice songs, and the rest is complete sh1t compared to S/T and Toxicity.
Nonetheless, good review. You do great work. :thumb:
| | | "something vital"? "Boom!" "The Coral"?
I don't think agree with any of it, really, though I do like the band despite their questionable politics. Good writing, however.

The only good song on this CD is Mr. Jack, this CD just isn't good...
Digging: A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head | | | I like this CD. It was the first SOAD album I listened to. True, it can't compare to Mezmerize, but I still like it.
Well written review too. :thumb:

You forgot to talk about one other silly song... F**k the System.

When I first bought this CD I thought it wasn't that good. A few months later I started listening to it I came to like it more and more. Since the release of Mezmerize I've come to enjoy it even more.
It feels alot like a transition album between Toxicity and Mezmerize. Somehow listening to Mezmerize made me like this one even more.
I think it's a very undeappreciated album. I actually think alot of the intrumentality is superior to Toxicity.
Roulette and Streamline are some of SOAD's best songs IMO. Most of the songs are just plain fun for me, like I-E-A-I-A-I-O and F**k the System.
I dunno why alot of fans dislike it really, but since thinking of it as their experimentation to what will eventually become Mezmerize and (presumably) Hypnotize I've liked it alot more.
I give it a solid 4/5.This Message Edited On 09.20.05

Ehh, I mega disagreee.
IMO, this was the bands worst album. Half the songs weren't even listenable. The only thing I could stand, was Bubbles.
But as always, good review :smoke:

Oh, and no way are they like Mr. Bungle. This Message Edited On 09.20.05
| | | I love this album. It has a immature, flat out rocking spirit to it that is absent from most music today that gets too full of itself and loses the original point of music.
I-E-A-I-A-I-O is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. I'm not joking.
And unlike his other efforts, I like the backup vocalist's efforts on here, he adds to the whole fun feeling.
Awesome.
