one of their more darker and deeper albums lyrically, it does take several listens for it to grow on you. As of now, Scarred, Voices and 6:00 are my favorites. An absolutely underrated album.

Most excellent review btw. This was the first DT album I heard and is still my favourite. Imagine the scene - late night at home, put the young kids to bed and had some time (for a change) to watch some late night telly and watched MTV's Headbangers Ball. This was a special devoted to DT and to the new release, Awake. Now bear in mind that as a kid I LOVED heavy music, the heavier the faster the better (saw Judas Priest 6x on one tour in the late 70s) but getting married in the mid 80s and having kids a little while after that, put a big STOP on my music listening, at least my rock/metal listening. After all, I didn't want to deafen the kids at the volume I played it. So I was out of touch for at least ten years and Dream Theater comes on. Heavy, great metal riffs, a drummer who f***d his drum kit he played it so loud, quality melodies and sound values. This was it. I couldn't wait to get to the nearest CD store the following day to buy a copy. But the HMV Cambridge didn't stock anything as "esoteric" as Dream Theater. So off to London I went for work, and bought my copy and played it almost non stop for three days. "6:00", "Caught In A Web" and best of all "Lie" are among my favourite songs by anyone.

This is easily my favourite DT album. I like some of the more technical material, but the songwriting is good and Portnoy's drums are particularly good.
