But isn't the very act of rating music essentially ranking it? Yes, opinion on music is very subjective and kinetic, but it has a purpose. Yes, if someone wanted to see my National ranking they could have looked at my ratings but I wanted to show my opinion compared to others mentioned just before.

well not really. you can't really compare different albums/artists and say these two albums are of equal quality, but you can certainly think that's the case. personally i'm not rating to rank, i'm rating so i know i what i like and what i don't (degrees are always hard to pin-point). favorite albums lists are just attempts of acchieving some sort of inner scheme as to what one individual prefers over some other albums.

I can see where you're coming from. Everyone enjoys and likes to think about music in different ways, and no one way is really any more viable than any other. The very idea of placing any sort of quantitative value onto something as inherently qualitative as music is a pretty large conceit no matter how you view it. Therefore, I somewhat prefer ranking over rating, since it only provides a general sense of relative quality as opposed to a specific quantitative value.

Usually I don't have 'favourite songs' but Bloodbuzz Ohio is straight-up my fave The National song

Nice choice, might be top 5 for me. Slow Show is definitely my favorite from this band though.
