The instrumental version of this album stands at a hard 4 on here so it's obvious Spencer is what puts most off. I loved him on this though, then he started doing obnoxious layering on everything and the influence Casey had fell away and he started writing utterly shit vocal lines.

Also Holcomb, Nolly, and Halpern can't write for shit. Casey and Orbin had much more meaningful contributions.

Are they clean vocals or does it fluctuate

How do you define what is well written? Almost every single riff these guys put out after P:1 is unique and interesting.

Vox are varied on this. I wouldn't say Buttersnips is the best (non-Racecar) track, you can't really go wrong with anything on this one cause they cherry-picked the best material they had ever made over the past 5-6 years or something and put it all on this one, so it's like their greatest hits debut. That and the better lineup is why this destroys the rest of their stuff.

I haven't even bothered listening past PII but a good riff doesn't mean shit if you can't incorporate it into a song properly, and they already struggled with that on this album in the majority of songs.

Not to me.

Here's an example of them not annoying me post-P1:

But even that song I can't listen to cause of Spencer's "growls." Fuck they're bad.

Holcomb's my favorite songwriter in the band tbh

PI and PII are equally good for me. The rest is of their material is notably worse but it's still not terrible.

Omega is their best imo

PI = PII > Omega > Alpha > PIII > Clear for me
|
| |
^that is exactly the correct ranking

Clear is soooo underrated, probably my second fave

Fair enough man. It's a 3 for me, couldn't get into it.

For me, the thing that kills me the most about P:1 is the production. It feels very monochromatic at times and, although there are lots of memorable moments, nothing shines through the production. I kinda wish they would go back through the songs and touch them up a bit, kinda like what BOO did with "The Eternal Reign".
I think a lot of people have weird biases about what Periphery should be v.s. what they are. I'm personally glad that Periphery has a unique style and sound.

"Holcomb [...] can't write for shit."
Lolwut? The guy is one of the most fascinating riff writers in progressive metal. His outtakes are more interesting material than most guitarists write on their best days.

Holcomb has the most signature style of the 3, that's for sure. I also think he is the most technically gifted
