It's one of those classic albums that I really have to force myself to listen to now though - listened to it a lot over a 5 year period back in 2002-2007 and now I rarely feel like returning. A lot of my 4.5's are 5 in terms of quality but not albums I replay enough to be personal 5's

I'm the same Doof, to make it to 5 and stay there its got to be something I consistently come back to. Recently knocked The Glow pt2 down just because its not something I frequently want to come back to, despite how it probably deserves a 5

I dont base my 5's on whether i come back to it often. In fact, i dont listen to most of my 5's often because ive already played the shit out of them.

It's more that if anyone sat me down and said 'you have to play [insert any of my 5's] today, how do you feel about that?' I'd be fine with any of them.
If someone said 'you've got to listen to 'In the Aeroplane', the whole way through no skipping, how'd you feel about that?' I'd be 'aaaaahhh, ok, suppose that'd be cool, I'll get right on it' [crosses fingers]
I've played most of my 5s to death but some of them I still spin regular (20 times a year?)

A point of difficulty I have are those albums that I love and would probably listen to fairly regularly but for the fact that they're the kind of album that requires an especially attentive listen in one go, as well as being lengthy, which I rarely have the time for these days. Stuff like And Their Refinement of the Decline and Lift Yr Skinny Fists. I rate them both probably lower than I should, just because I hadn't had the chance to form any personal connection with them given the infrequency with which I play them

agreed; was actually thinkin about this in the shower this morning (srsly) but yea i find i come back to my 4/5 or 4.5/5 records more just because i havent worn em out as much as my 5s though i've had em for the same amount of time or longer

Nice bump Doof. I can definitely understand not wanting to play this at any time but it's still a hard 5 for me.

Tbh I've never really understood that comparison but a lot of people do find Castaways similar to NMH.
Decemberists > NMH btw (though not in the Castaways era fwiw)
