Atmosphere does not have to always mean builds. The atmosphere on panopticon’s opener is more immersive than most post-metal band’s discogs

@TRMshadow that's the exact same reason why I like Panopticon, as soon as you play the first second of the album, they just deliver right from the get go.

I will never not get goosebumps when the riff in Carry finally hits

Whatever volume the lady on “carry” is recorded at is The Golden Ratio vis a vis the rest of the mix. I will not be taking questions about this

Carry is a heartbreak of a song.

It took way to long for Isis to click with me. Started with Neurosis curiosity a few years back, then dabbled in Cult of Luna and wondered why they were always yelling (a favorite band of mine though), and then ISIS just seemed to be a little plain at first glance. Not sure why but all of a sudden I realized how beautiful and primal and destructive their sound actually is throughout their discography. Now I can't get enough

Carry is heavy. Not just instrumentally either. Probably my favorite song.

@Zakusz Glad to know, for me, it's the opposite with Cult of Luna, I get people absolutely adore them, but, their music just hasn't had the same emotional impact as ISIS' music.

@VlacDrac - Have you heard Luna's "Lights on the Hill"?

Cult of Luna is gr8 but ISIS just has something special that I don't get with CoL

Ehh, ISIS's special period lasts 2 albums for me, Celestial and this.
Cult of Luna's discog is more enjoyable as a whole for me

I mean yeah, CoL have displayed more longevity than ISIS but ISIS' highs for me are just about unbeatable

I haven’t tried super hard but I can’t get into any other post-metal tbh
Same with metalcore vis a vis Converge

Luna just all sounds so samey to me. It's always a similar tempo, the same chuggy quarter-note riffs, the same 1/3 kick-snare drums patterns, the same mid-range shouted vocals. I've admittedly only tried Salvation, Highway, Vertikal, and Dawn, but it's a mood that wears thin after less than an album for me. Solid 4 but not often a 5 -- though "Waiting For You", "Leave Me Here", and "Dark City" stand out off the top of my head.

i dug cult of luna when i was a kid but their stuff has grown way off of me in the last year or two. awfully robotic and plodding. i still dig some of their stuff and SATH has grown on me a ton but as a whole nah, ain't it. ISIS by contrast is organic and inviting

Beyond thru SATH is a killer run and defs had something special (and the other CoL albums have their moments) but yeah agreed - have come back round to ISIS big time in the last year or so, and organic is v much the word

Sometimes I can decide between this and Panopticon for best ISIS album, they truly know what theywere doing musically and artistically, and this also applies to other Aaron Turner, not only is the music essential, but the little details in the packaging are as well. For example, I like how minimal the covers and backcovers of ISIS' albums are, so the listener can fully appreciate the packaging and album art.
