DO IT!!! or, conversely, you could just crank up Hearts on Fire and drink some beer. It'll probably make you feel invinceable.
damn it, this was meant for BigHans comment about Heats on Fire

@MrPorchular:
Jake la Motta was a fucking cunt and he deserved a lot worse than he got. I didn't give a shit about one character in that film. I never said it didn't have emotional impact, though, I just think that Rocky, for all it's Hollywood cliches, was a grimy but genuinely powerful film.
And I'm aware that this is all subjective, which you seem to struggle with.

I honestly cant pick the best song. At gunpoint I'd probably go with "No Easy Way Out." Bullet for my Valentine covered it, and fucking ruined it btw.

Yeah brokenjewel i can't tolerate your opposing views, you're making me SO FUCKING MAD i think i'm going to punch an old man in the kidneys
|
| |
No, it's ok - Scorsese is the greatest director ever he's so super and Raging Bull is so perfect it's awesomely amazing lol can't believ Rocky beat it
|
| |
^lol, as long as that old man's not me -- I have kidney issues. seriously.
Brokenjewel: I think you just complimented the film without realizing it. You're not supposed to like Jake La Motta, he's portrayed that way intentionally to provoke a negative emotional response from the audience. I think it's an even more compelling character study than Rocky, which is basically just your standard down-on-his-luck aging boxer story where he finds some sort of redemption in the end. Jake La Motta's story is far more unique, and probably a lot closer to the lives boxers lived in that era.
goddamnit, I keep commenting too late.

Rocky Villians ranked
1. Ivan Drago - I Must Break You
2. Clubber Lang - Mr T rules
3. Apollo Creed - Could be higher but wasn't a villian in the end, and wasn't nearly as cutthroat as the other two
4. Mason (The Line) Dixon - horrible acting by Antonio Tarver
5. Tommy The Machine Gunn - Rocky V is so fucking terrible I can't explain it.
|
| |
I'm complimenting it intentionally. And the film comes across as sympathetic to him which I found distasteful. I don't believe that you have to like characters anyway, I'm just saying that when a film has such a remarkable affect on so many people it elevates it beyond the sum of its parts. The most technically proficient band are not necessarily the greatest and the same is true of film.
And it was my subjective opinion placing it above, not a lack of knowledge regarding film.

Dude, Apollo is top because he became good.
And Clubber below Drago?
"What are your predictions for the fight?"
"Paaaainnn."

Hey Woman! Hey Woman! I bet you lie awake every night wishing you had a real man, since your old man aint got no heart. Tell you what, why dont you come up to my apartment tonight, and I'll show you a real man" - Mr T.
Drago has to be villian #1 for killing Apollo. Has to be.
Shit, I forgot THUNDERLIPS (Hulk Hogan, Rocky 3)

Million Dollar Baby, lol. Nice one.
The Lion King > Million Dollar Baby > Slathering fanboys
|

Yeah, fair point about killing Apollo. Although Clubber killed Mick, indirectly.

True, the brawl he tried to start exiting the locker room gave Mick the heart attack.

I didn't mean to insinuate that you weren't knowledgeable about film, I apologize if it came off like that. And I agree with your point about technicality not trumping emotional effect. I don't even really think Raging Bull is THAT technical of a film, it was just masterfully created. Kind of like how The National don't astound you with musicianship, they just seem to place every single note and chord change in precisely the right moment. That's how I felt about Raging Bull.
I didn't get the impression that the film was sympathetic to his character personally, I thought it was a pretty objective look at a complex and violent person who ultimately should be viewed as a sociopath.

I was going to bring up Thunderlips, but I got sidetracked talking about Raging Bull haha. I'd say your ranking is pretty much how I'd order em Hans.
sorry about the double post.

I think Rocky 3 came out in 1982, right about the time Hulkamania started to hit in full force. Personally, I think Hogan's role as Thunderlips was career altering, and helped his legend tremendously.

That part was only aimed at porchular, dude - sorry bout that. You put your opinion across lucidly and, tbh, I like talking about this stuff, especially with people who see things differently to me.

^word, I agree. Different view points from intelligent people are always interesting to me.
