Almost as good as Souvenirs but not quite. Then again, almost nothing is as good as Souvenirs. Souvenirs is one of the best albums of all time. It's absolutely breathtakingly perfect. I find it funny to hear people disparaging Souvenirs on this site when it's considered to be an untouchable masterpiece everywhere else. This place must exist in some bizarre microcosm of irrationality.

BTW, more than Agalloch or Wolves in the Throne Room, I would compare Alcest to Drudkh. In fact, the first release I heard from Niege was Le Secret and it was recommended to me due to my intense love for Autumn Aurora (one of my 10 favorite metal albums easily).

If you like Alcest, I'd definitely recommend you check out Drudkh, particularly Autumn Aurora. There are a couple moments in Ecailles that really reminds me of AA, particularly the instrumental break in Solar Song and the portion of Part 2 of the title track after the initial vocal portion.

@zaruyache: All well and good, but not all of those 41 minutes contain substance. The songs don't feel that much longer, and since one of the tracks was wasted on Abysses, it just felt so much shorter.

Oh, and 41 minutes is nothing compared to the other things I listen to. Souvenirs felt longer. However, I think the music on average here is better. His songwriting has improved. Pushing my vote up to 3.5. But if there was one more song, it would've wiped the floor with Souvenirs.

The song writing on this album is much more melancholic, which appeals to me moreso than Souvenirs. However, I loved Souvenirs more due to it having more substance. Even though it was slightly shorter, it just felt more substantial.

I can't see that at all. Album had like three good ideas and played off them throughout the whole duration. Really boring after the first 3-4 tracks.

not really "get"ing this band, if the electric guitars were replaced with acoustics it wouldnt be anything near metal. its not bad though

parts of this even sound like explosions in the sky
