I like it far better than their latter albums. As you said it sounds more like grunge. The later albums are good but a bit too experimental for my liking.

"We Suck Young Blood", "Where I End and You Begin", and "Sit Down Stand Up" are pretty weak, but the rest of it is pretty solid in my opinion.
