i don't mean they would need to be any more technical. they just simply aren't powerful and the vocalist does a lousy job at trying to sound pissed

Blimey. I honestly don't think there has been anyone better in sounding pissed off. You can feel the bile.

i guess in the 70s they were one of the most pissed-sounding bands. does basically nothing for me though

This thread of basically becoming a clash of generations with their views of what constitutes pure anger in music, and I don't really see anything wrong with that.

im sure i would probably feel better about this if i had heard it before i already got into hardcore/grind/metalcore which exposed me to a much harsher and angrier version of punk than this
because in comparison this just seems a bit lacklustre

That's how I feel about a lot of things. You've found something you find so aggressive and cool then you go deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole.

You're all back to front dude. This has the same if not more anger and venom than all that lot. Metalcore? lol.

I really fail to see how this has half the aggression of this for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7IcJLdBwQA

Finally concluded that the Spunk album is far better than this. Vocally Rotten is almost unrecognizable (although that's probably due to the heavy prescence of gang vocals) but instrumentally it's just so much better. The energy, musicianship, it's such a bigger punch in the face especially on Anarchy in the UK

You can find a hardcore band now and say it sounds more aggressive than this and you wouldn't be wrong, but it's not just about the instruments. Two different generations of music. I've always liked old punk more. Had a certain tongue and cheek bite to it. Sounded more sincere to me as the listener. If you're looking for something technical you're not going to find it here, that's not what this album is about.

I haven't listened to this all the way through so I'm not expert on it but imo anger is really a relative thing... I mean people thought the Ramones made angry music back in the 70s lol
And just because it's not an angry album by today's standards doesn't mean you can't appreciate other things about it, right? Like from what I've heard from this the songwriting is still clever and great
|
| |
Like Black Sabbath really aren't that heavy by today's standards for metal but their riffs are still damn awesome

Exactly, there's plenty of bands that play heavier music now, but that doesn't mean I like it more or that they're better. Songwriting is key... how memorable are those records y'know? They've stood the test of time for me. There's a certain authenticism that can't be replicated or undone.
