I’m clearly in the minority, but I think The Morning Benders’ debut LP is better than ‘Big Echo’. The denser production & more expansive sound on this album were required for the band’s growth, but it ultimately suits them less. Things start out well with ‘Excuses’ & ‘Promises’ being exactly what they were aiming for. In addition, the way too short ‘Cold War (Nice Clean Fight)’ is as catchy as hell.

The problem is that elsewhere, when the hooks are not there, the production takes away all of the band’s charm & likeability, leaving them sounding like any other indie band. For the most part, the quiet/loud dynamics do not work as the payoffs are not good enough (with the exception of ‘Stitches’), meaning most of the 2nd half is rather unmemorable. Album is still good & could be an effective stepping stone, but I’ll take their catchy & likeable debut over this any day.

idk man. it's really fucking hard to make it past the first four tracks, but on a few listens the later tracks are pleasing. unfortunately excuses and promises take up most of my listening time.

Yes! Something to get excited about is correct. Big Echo is a inspiring follolw up to Talking Through Tin Cans and I can not stop playing BOTH albums. Big Echo is a gorgeous album and definitely deserves a listen.

good call weeping - thought i was the only one that thoght so! (maybe you'll agree with the review i wrote a while back?)

@davey - i appreciated the rawness of their debut and even though i like this a little better, i think they were so astonished to be working with chris taylor that they just started taking a back seat to his influence and ended up sounding a lot like grizzly bear

You don't know me by name!

Seriously, "Stitches" is obviously the best track.
