@LakeeshaJackson I'll be damned, I didn't like Genesis in the past and I would scorn their discography as well, and only recently I had the same revelation as you did!

I had my revelation last year, not because I didn't like Genesis but because I actually didn't bother to listen to the majority of their work until last year. Much like my Steely Dan discovery, I was kicking myself for how much amazing music I was missing out on

This is an achievement of an album.

Deep, layered, open to interpretation themes with some amazing music and tunes.

I didn’t have the patience for it when I first listened to it but after repeated listens it draws you in, you piece together ‘the story’ and it hits home that this is one of the very best.

Absolutely, one of their best and one of the very best of all prog albums.

The story as I see it is as follows:

Rael is an NYC street urchin who is directionless and can only channel his feelings through graffiti.
He is trapped by his inability to express feelings of desire, individuality, belonging and guilt for his previous actions concerning a nameless girl.

This isolation is represented by a dreamlike cage in which guidance back to ‘reality’ is offered by his brother John who remains distant and emotionally detached as he knows that Rael is a bad egg but he still offers hope and forgiveness.

Rael is still seduced by by the superficial and erotic believing them to be more fulfilling and tangible than the abstract of ‘love’ and integrity.

Realising that he is one of the seedy and grotesque majority he symbolically castrates himself by foregoing his desires but in doing so has part of his very being taken away from him.

As a result of understanding the causes of this existential crises he has an opportunity to escape his burden and guilt but willingly throws himself back down the scree into the pits to save his brother John who himself is having his trials of life.

The conclusion is that no matter who we are we all suffer conflict of thought and reflect on our past and present on the way to adulthood and wisdom which takes personal sacrifice hence the symbolic ‘lamb’

It's a very interesting and complex subject, really. A very personal bet of Gabriel. When he was preparing the concept and writing the lyrics in a room, the other members were in other room writing the music. A very curious and strange way to create a work. And curiously, it worked amazingly.

@Zakalwe I think Gabriel put out a short writing describing the story, and the way I interpret the Lamia's character, is that Rael did something despicable, of sexual nature, to a girl, and the whole trip is his descend and ascend. That's how I would explain the recurring theme of sexuality, frustration, the ''We all loved you'' by the Lamias, and eventually the castration.

Also, the Lilywhite Lilith character that distracts him for a while but then abandons him might be a reference to drug abuse, but that's probably too on the nose, don't know

Yeah there’s certainly a few allusions to Rael getting carried away in ‘counting out time’

Jesus. 70s man.

I cannot believe that Diva thinks this is average. Shocking.

Actually, I think a couple of songs are stunning, but most of the rest make my eyes glaze over. I'm about to give early (Peter Gabriel) Genesis another shot, but they're one of the few classic prog bands I had a hard time getting into. (Although I did love that early live album they did with Gabriel.)

We already had two Genesis converts and new-borns. Perhaps Diva is the third?

I do suggest giving the motion picture a chance, it elevates the whole experience and is quite engaging as well.

^ That's eerily close to some lyrics from Captain Jack by Billy Joel
